Leica vs....Some Contax G images (including 90mm)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I'm posting this separately so that if it becomes flame-bait, the previous post won't suffer.

A folder full of Contax G images

Just some samples to show what that "other camera" is capable of...

Andy, the contax G is a great little camera, I used to to use one. And... these are far and away the best pictures you've ever posted, IMO. (Or maybe I've been sleeping through them, I don't know). I especially like the gogogogo coach picture. Excellent.

However, it is VERY RUDE to post images taken with other cameras on this list...

Rob; I asked the question about the Contax 90mm lens versus the Leica 90mm lens in an earlier thread today...I asked for someone to post some images..In yesterdays deleted thread there was a good discussion about the contax 90mm versus leica 90mm lens..the thread was deleted because of the food comments and negative comments about certain countries..kelly

Nice pictures from Contax G As for example of studio shot with rangefinder

http://www.photo.net/photodb/image-display?photo_id=781834&size=md It is definitely not exactly what you compose in the viewfinder, due to inevitable perspective error which cannot be corrected by parallax correction.

The 28 and 35mm tend to close in on the middle, idont like that composition wise. The 90mm is great, i can count the hairs on the womens upperlip (criterium?). But most amazing is the 21mm, really straight middle line, 'flat' composition which is hard with that angle and relatively good imagequality with this bright light.

no dude about it, contax makes good optics, much better than what I´m used to see from SLR contax. And goodimages too Andy, well I´m used to your good work Andy.Specialy like mom and flag.

Andy, very good pictures!

You have a good eye for color...

Thanks, Andy, very nice pics. I have a G2 and I love it... okay, okay, not as much as my Leica. There. The only problem I have with it, and you seem to have it too, is that it tends to either change «defensive» lineswomen into «offensive» lineswomen or steel the ball away from the center right before the snap. :-)

Can you tell us what color film you use? Nice images. There was an interesting test in Photo Techniques magazine a few years ago intensely comparing Contax 45/2 to Summicron 50/2, using color slides and observers who were asked to rate images without knowing which were which. As I recall, the lenses were very similar (excellent!) with Leica a tad better wide open, and some of the images at f/8 from the Contax given a slight nod, due to better color. I wish the Contax were available in M mount. They are at least half the price of Leitz glass. Have you ever had any out of focus shots? This plagued me with my G2. It has an odd (for me) combination of spot focus and center weighted exposure.

I have a black G2 w/ the 45 and 90 lenses that I recently acquired. Excellent travel/allround package that also my wife enjoys tremendously. Bought it brand new w/ UV filters, hoods and a warming filter from auth. dealer for less than $1,500... Can't beat that value!

cheers,

There is a very nice Gontax G site dedicated to images from that tool at http://www.contaxg.com

Wish we a Leica site dedicated to images this well organized.

A site dedicated to Contax G images

Pardon me while I practice my html

The G system has some quirks, but it's a wonderful camera, and the lenses are a bargin. Here's a few shots I took in Italy...all with the G2 and the 35/2 or the 90/2.8, on Provia 100.

Shot 1

Shot 2

Shot 3

This is not a Leica vs Contax thing. These shots could have easily been made with a Contax, Leica or your favorite SLR.

"the best pictures you've ever posted..."

Hmm, maybe I should switch back...?

The G with all of it's auto functions is certainly easy to use - it allows you to concentrate on the image. It's taken me about a year to 'regain my swing' with the all-manual M4 variants - relearning exposure, factoring in manual focus, etc. - to the point where I'm as competent with the "L" as with the "C". Now I just need to find subject matter as good....

Color film - oddly, I was using color negative with the Contax, although I usually shoot Velvia slides. The color pix here were all Kodak Supra 100.

Hmmm - now you mention it, I got my shots confused - these ARE the defense players. D-oooh!

Jim and Andy,

NICE shot...all 'round!

Just got a G2 with the 45 Planar + TLA200, and I can hardly tell the difference between the pics from that and the 50 Summicron (latest version), handheld, Kodak 100SW or XP2 Super @ 250, in walkabout shooting. The AF is fun; can't say I like the TTL flash implementation - a little cumbersome if you want to have exposure compensation for fill flash, but other than that a nice, light, quality package.
