Camera Body/Shutter Odometer?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have been in the market recently for a (used) 1N or 3 body, in perfect or "mint" condition. Unfortunately, people tend to be too liberal in using those attributes to describe their equipment. Actually, I've been shocked to see what people call "MINT". I was wondering if anyone knew whether either of these two pro bodies posessed a tamper-proof, non-resettable digital readout which might be able to be 'coaxed out' on the display panel indicating how many exposure shutter cycles the camera had actually been through? I'm imagining something (like a secret code?) might have to be input in some way to pursuade the camera to give up this info? If this is just a pipe-dream, does anyone have any other ideas on how to judge exactly how many shutter cycles a 'used' 1N or 3 has endured?

Charles, as a matter of fact you can, I don't know exactly how but I've just bought a EOS 1n and took it to get checked out at a local service dealer, and the fella told me it's only been fired 1,300 shots through the computer. Hope this helps

Any Canon service center can give you this info by placing a doodad in the hotshoe and downloading shutter and other service data from the camera. If you go to "Canon Day" at a local dealer the tech will do it for free.

Does this only apply to a 1N or a 3?

Could a Canon service rep tell me the same info for an Elan 7e/EOS30 (or any other EOS camera, for that matter)?
