*NEW FORUM?*

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I'd like everyone to check out http://www.notbbc.co.uk/ and look at the chat forums on there. They're similar to the old communicata job and may be an alternative to the creaking old HMS Greenpun.

I've exchanged emails with the guy and he reckons he can put something up alongside the existing forums, although he is concerned about disk space (?). It's not as protected as this forum, but does have a registration system so that 'guest' posters are easily identifiable.

I don't think it can deal with HTML weirdy things and tables and such like.

Anyway, have a look.

Wow...yes, like the old communicata one but as driven by Michael Schumacher. Impressive site. Be a bit worried about the lack of password protection, and the capacity to cope with a heavy match day thread. But definitely worth looking at if this continues to creak.

And loved the privacy statement.

Very good look and feel and it doesn't have the irritating ad's that you get with EZboard. If it can deal with the traffic thrown at it then it gets my vote.

Ok, set up a test forum for you all to try... take a look at

or

click here (assuming this works ok)

cheers

Just getting this back to the top.

Looks nice, though I'd prefer a white background and black text...less obvious when viewing at work. ;-) If we can work out security issues(password protection, ip address reporting in case someone might need to be banned, ability to delete occasional offensive posts, etc), and it can stand up to the rigours of a match day thread or other busy periods..we might have a winner. I do miss that old Communicata style layout. :-)

In full agreement with Ciara but am impressed with the speed.

Looks good to me. (:o)

It's got to be standard Microsoft colours - ie white background with blue and grey.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

Hmm...I get a HTTP 500 error message; and I can get plenty of those here. This could be Blueyonder broadband up to its tricks, though.

I'm happy to included this on my www.nufcbbs.com site which allows you to point to greenspun, ezboard and now this new one

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

If you go into Tools>Internet Options>Colours, you make it look how you want. Meanwhile, Rob's made it black on white as requested by summa yiz.

He's also pointed out that IP addy's are logged and troublemakers can be removed.

Keep the comments coming...

Actually, scrub that, cos it'll screw up the colours on every other website you visit.

Dan: I like it - head and shoulders over other previous alternatives, like ezboard. As others have mentioned above and in previous threads, apart from worries about capacity, reliability, security etc of any new site, there's a huge history here on Greenspun.

But I'd vote the new site a serious contender. Shame there's no match day thread until August to seriously test it out...World Cup threads just aren't the same!

Looks great - and fast. I get back text on white background - perhaps my personal browser settings?

As I have posted, I feel it would be much better/more convenient to have new messages & threads added at the top of the lists rather than the bottom - this is also an issue with EzBoard.

Is the userid you register with just for the NOTBBC forum or all related ones ?

I tried Josh & Johnsh andsomebody has them already. Didn't seem any faster that Greenthingy at lunchtime UK.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

It's for all the NOTBBC forums.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

Just registered. Looks good to me and it comes up black and white, handy for viewing at work and really the ONLY colours for an NUFC bbs!

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

Could we not simluate a matchday thread to try it out? If a load of us agree to post a load of messages to the same thread over 90 minutes to see what happens? They wouldn't have to say anything sensible (why change the habits of a lifetime?) - I'm sure we could arrange a time to do this.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

Jackpo If some poor soul stumbles across an imaginary footy match thread we'll all be certified insane. BTW, do we win? How many does Shearer score. Who are we playing, and what time's kick-off?

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

Err, I meant Jacko...............

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

...so why don't we arrange the "alternative" match day thread for England's first World Cup game v Sweden - k.o. 10.30am Sunday June 2nd?

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

A while a go Jonno suggested we set up a chat for matchdays. Should be fairly easy to rig up on msn.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2002

Just been over to register and test again. Lookin good! Let us know how the test matchday thread goes. I won't be joining for England v Sweden as I'll either be heading for a bar in Virginia for a middle- of-the-night live broadcast(if they really have it!) or else avoiding the 'net and probably the day's other matches if I have to wait for the tape delay network broadcast that afternoon.
