Bill Pirece's column at digitaljournalist.orgOnce you've read the column click over to the "cover story" for May. Work by Donna Ferrato (definitely a Leica user) and Donna DeCesare (camera unknown - but does it matter?)
(This is the same site that ran some of Rob Appleby's pix last month)

Noticed how many comments you've gotten, and how interested forum users are in photography? But nice try, and I thourghly enjoyed the link.

There usually aren't many comments on these types of posts. I read it, but before today. It's a really good site.

I always enjoy Bill Pierce's column. He is down to earth and smart.

Hmmm, so based on his musings, what is Cindy Sherman?

I don't know what he would think of Cindy Sherman, but I know what I think. I went to a show of hers years ago in Soho, before she had books and was famous. Her prints floored me. I don't think they show well in books, they work well large, and they are incredible photographs. You can quickly understand what she is saying when you see them in that context.

Sorry, I had to say something about equipment... What's that camera Donna Ferrato is using in her self-portrait? Looks almost like a black M6 with duct tape covering the vulcanite. A "reverse chrome" body body? Weird.

Funny, that, I thought I had made a comment but it's not here.

Thanks for the link. I don't have time to go through all her video clips, but Ferrato's work is amazing! It's voyeuristic, intimate, respectful, celebratory, whimsical, all at the same time.

Jeff, I agree with you. Cindy Sherman's work floors you when seen in the flesh, so to speak. She IS an ARTIST that happens to use the photographic medium. I had a similar suprize when I saw Basquit's work at in NYC a few years back. Huge, raw and electrifying...nothing like what books portrayed. Annie Liebowitzs' show at the International Center for Photography in NY, also altered my perception of her work a bit. Big assed prints that swallow you up, and rivet your attention. Love those shows.
