Yellowstone/Tetons backcountry

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I will be travelling to Yellowstone/Tetons for a week of vacation in this June. I'd like to do some day hikes around the Tetons and would like hear your favorite day's hike in the area for scenery and photography. The primary equipment will be my R outfit for the wildlife and macro, 4x5 for the landscape (as well as macro with a 6x7 back). Thanks.

I'm not a BIG hiker, but the path along the northeast shore of String Lake is a great place for dawn pictures of The Grand (Teton) with the lake as reflective foreground. The alpenglow is pretty nice if the weather is right.

There's also a boat ride across the lake just south of String Lake that leads to some trailheads at the base of the main Tetons.

And be sure to at least pay homage at the "Ansel Adams" (not the official name) overlook of the Snake River with the Tetons in the background - at the north end of the Antelope Flats. Best in the afternoon and at sunset if you can get clouds to act as 'lens hoods' and throw down some nice 'God rays' over the mountains.

Be prepared for anything - I've arrived in Yellowstone in June in the middle of a snowstorm.

The overlook is, unfortunately, overgrown. If you can rent a tall stepladder it minght work. (I'll bet that AA used his car-top platform).

Cascade Canyon is pretty great for wildlife at times. Another good thing to do is take the tram ride up at teton village and then hike down randevous canyon. The Moose to Teton Village road often has bears and moose on it.

Another great thing to do is to go over into Idaho and get a back side view of the tetons.

A great postcard is a shot from the chapel of the church of the transfiguration just inside the entrance at moose.

Your post also talks about Yellowstone. If you get up that way a hike up pelican creek could put you face to face with some bears, although this is not the greatest mountain scenery area. Access to this is a few miles east of fishing bridge.

Also, take a ton of bug stuff/spray as they will be in full force.

Everything depends upon time of day in teton/yellowstone country. Be prepared for anything in terms of weather.

Gerald, I'll be there for 2 weeks in June. Perhaps we can meet somewhere and compare notes.

Thanks to everyone for the posting.

Doug - Let's hope the weather there will pan out for a great shoot out of Yellowstone and the Tetons in June! I will talk to you offline about the possibility of meeting somewhere in the park.
