HOWTO: post pictures

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I am a rookie in photography, but maybe I can help some of us by explaining how to post a picture here:

I´ll try to explain in a few steps how you can put your pics up in the forum: 1) First of all: your pics need to be on the internet. A very suitable place to do so is www.photo.net. You have to subscribe to the site and after that you can create your own portfolio there. It is very straight forward and online help is available at the site. Ask me if you need extra information.

2) Scan your pics in JPEG format and add them to your portfolio.

3) Start a thread at the forum and tell people where to find your pics. In other words: the pictures in your portfolio all have one unique internet address, a so called URL or Unique Resource Location. This URL is displayed in the Address box of your browser. For example: http://www.photo.net. If you open the porfolio on the page that contains the picture you want the forum to see, simply copy and paste this URL in a new thread.

4) You can make the URL also clickable. This means that one simple clicks on your text which actually becomes a link and the person will be transferred to the URL you designated it to be. This is very easy to do: the FAQ of the Leica forum tells you how to do so in a few steps. However, this is not necessary. People can also simply copy and paste the URL you gave them and the effect is the same. I hope this is of some help. I am very curious to see your first post!

That´s it John!
Now all you have to do is change the word "LUSENET" in a word that refers to your picture.

Even quicker, especially if you only want to display one photo is an HTML link, thus:

If a picture is on say photo.net just using the URL of the displayed pic won't work. In that case click and hold on the photo; when the menu appears select "Open this picture in a new window". Then copy the URL for that new window and insert into your link.

Respect to whoever it was stated that info here a week or two ago. Its been most useful.

Why won't this come up? GRRRRRR!!!!!!!! :o)

< img src = "file name" blah>

exclude all gaps & the blah!!

-- Tim Franklin (tim_franklin@mac.com), May 19, 2002.

John, instead of using the HTML code "a href" you have to use "img src". Then end the HTML code by "/img". All between the brackets of course.

…except the one between img and src!! Got it !!

OH MY GOD! Can I buy a print of that twin lights shot John? I've bought from other forum members, so I'm really serious. E-mail me a price for an 11"X14" if the image can go that big. If not, whatever size you recommend. Tech info also, although I don't care what you shot it with, it's wonderful!

If you have an html-enabled email client (most are) you can send a test message to yourself with the img src tag to see if it will work before you post the message here. Hint, hint.

-- Ken Geter (kgeter@yahoo.com), May 19, 2002.

Hello Ken; The first post of mine works in most message boards such as yahoo groups; ebay and most web pages and my mail but not on this board. My second post of the photo works in mail and this board too.

The added syntax required is two " " marks . These were required long ago on most systems; but are now redundent on most boards such as yahoo groups, ebay etc.

The typical img src=http://www.Ken.com/alienphoto.jpg may or may not work on this board after the brackets are added.

Adding the ancient systax " " insures it will work. Thus this board requires one to use ancient html. Thus the required string is img src="http://ken.com/alienphoto.jpg"

-- We Need Better Security (AlienCoverUp@aol.com), May 19, 2002.

Wha? I've always used the double quote syntax in img src tags. I guess I'm ancient.

The truth is out there. . . .

Thanks, Eric. I have opened a portfolio at Photo.net, but the fist B&W pic I uploaded (JPEG medium size, 5) shows as very big (like twice my monitor size) in "Medium" and as thumbnail in "Small". What did I do wrong? Is there a specific format or size I should save in PS, besides JPEG?

-- Olivier (olreiche@videotron.ca), May 20, 2002.

Olivier, resize your pic in PS to 5.5 inch across and abt 8 inch in length. That'll be just nice in photonet.

btw, I didn;t see you in the playground.;)

-- Yossi (yosslee@yahoo.com), May 20, 2002.

Thank you, Yossi. Sorry, too busy trying to sell my expensive gear and looking for a nice P&S and a house. Maybe tomorrow.
