................and before Jonno (and wor owd mucker ITK) say it, isn't what it used to be. But I've just happened on a shed load (well, actally a DVD load). Just picked up a copy of Get Carter. Marvelous. Some great shots (of the cinematic kind, tho on reflection.......), especially the closing scenes at Cambois. I know we discussed this a while back when the "GetCarter" website was launched. But seeing the movie film again is wonderful.

Great film. Since you're older than me (!) do you know where the 'long bar' was in Newcastle. The location features early on in the film but I've never been able to get my head around where it was or what's there now.

I seem to recall it was on Collingwood St., or just possibly Neville St. - you know along from the Central Stn but on the other side of the road.

If my memory serves me right, slighly opposite Central Station, think correct name was North Eastern Bar, turned into the Georde PRide?/ then was a Yates's wine lodge.

The original bar was brilliant. Distinct aroma of polish and "proppa" beer and barmen wearing waistcoats and aprons. When in with a lass and ws greeted with "Good evening sir is the young lady 18??"

Sound very regimental but believe you me the beer was good

Anyone know what's happened to / where to find the website set up by the Geordie fan of Get Carter? It sparked one of the last threads about the film after it was reported he was looking for one of the locations to complete his set of pics. Think he was called Michael Brady and he was a young lad when filming took place near his home.

Bookmarked his site at the time, but it now calls up a message from Tiscali saying: "Sorry, this user has not setup their web page."

Did one of Carter's mates return north to bump him off?

You cheeky monkey, Lynda. You must be thinking of Jonno or Clarky from the Blackburn game. I'm probably younger than you! Ahem........back to reality. Yes Benton, the site seems to have gone AWOL. I didn't bookmark it but searched on Google and got the same as you. However, the description does confirm that the site was owned by Michael Brady. Shame - let's hope it returns as there was a lot of research and it was great to see the "before and after" locations.

AFAIK, The Long Bar was almost directly across the road from the Central on Neville St. Didn't it have 2 entrances - one on Neville St and t'other on Westgate Road?

Thanks Chevy.

Yeah..thanks Chevy. As Michael says on his now much expanded site, he's now located every scene - and demonstrated how much the North East has changed. Looks like a real labour of love for the guy. Well worth a look.

His own take on the Long Bar, with pics, is:

Reputedly one of the longest bars in Europe the North Eastern pub was situated right opposite the Royal Station hotel, right next to the railway station and is where Jack Carter starts his journey in Newcaslte near the beginning of the film. The bar actually closed the same year the film was made 1970 and it was then demolished along with all the other surrounding buildings in 1971. The block was then rebuilt with another bar in much the same place as the long bar, but this time the bar stretches from street to street at basement level and is now a nightclub. From old pictures I have Hill house Hammond insurance brokers looks to be the closest place to where it once stood.

The Long Bar was a fantastic pub; a real bar, full of real characters.

I don't actually recall the building it formed part of, but what a tragedy for the city that we lost the wonderful Long Bar and had it replaced with the concrete monstrosity that now stands at the very bottom of Grainger St, at the junction with Neville St. Wanton rape, akin to the destruction of Old Eldon Square.

Screacher, weren't the closing scenes shot near Seaham? Either way ( Seaham or Cambois ) its a bliddy long run from Dunston Staithes.

-- Anonymous, May 20, 2002

Nah..........definately cambois (and wasnt it Blyth staithes...so not too much of a run)

It looked better in 1971 than it does now though (or is that just my nostalgia

Jonboy (from stakeford)

It was Cambois Staithes as the lad from Stakeford says. Not quite sure which bit of the north bank it was, but part of that area used to be called North Blyth. The staithes were on the right by the old chain ferry landing. Now that was a helluva contraption - a bit like an underwater cable-car mechanism (tho usually the rest was above the waterline).

However, I have a suspicion that the actual closing scenes were indeed shot near Seaham. So actually, it would have been closer to run from Dunston Staithes than from Cambois! They definiely start running north up Cambois Beach but end up at Blackhall Rocks, about 20 miles further south!

You're not alone in thinking it was Dunston - even MB thought that was the case.
