Plague rages as Prospero seals off himself and his partying guests( a masque is a medieval/renaissance kind of costume celebration). There follows a description of the castle's interior rooms in different colors and lighting winding to the black room with the red windows and the ebony clock chiming the hour. each time the clock chimes the party pauses in dread at the reminder of time. A strange guest wearing the offending mask of the Red Death is pursued by prospero into the black room. Enraged he pulls off the mask and there is nothing there- but Death. Eeveryone dies, the last with the last stroke of the winding down clock. Death came, was seen, and conquered. Winner take all.

A disease known as the Red Death is plaguing this fictional country, causing people to die quickly and gruesomely. But even though this disease is killing many, the Prince Prospero feels happy and hopeful. He decides to lock the gates of his palace and to ignore the illness ravaging the land. After several months he even throws a fancy masquerade ball. For this ball, he decorates the rooms of his house in single colors. The easternmost room is decorated in blue, with blue stained-glass windows. The next room is purple with the same color stained-glass windows, then green, then orange, then white, then violet. The seventh room is black, with red windows. Also in this room stands an ebony clock. When this clock rings for each hour, its sound is so loud and distracting that everyone stops talking and the orchestra stops playing. When the clock is not sounding, though, the rooms are so beautiful and strange that they seem to be filled with dreams, swirling in and among the people. Most people avoid the final, black and red room because it is nearest the clock and is so somber. At midnight, a new guest appears, dressed more ghoulishly than the rest: His mask looks like the face of a corpse, his garments are like a funeral shroud, and his face is sprinkled to resemble a victim of the Red Death. Prince Prospero becomes very angry that anyone with so little humor and levity would join his party. But everyone is so afraid of this masked man that they do nothing to prevent him from walking through each room. Finally Prince Prospero catches up to the new guest in the black and red room. But as soon as Prospero confronts the figure, the prince dies. When other partygoers enter the room to attack the cloaked man, they find that there is nothing below the costume. Everyone dies, because now the Red Death's presence in the palace has been acknowledged. "Darkness and Decay and the Red Death" have permeated the house and triumphed.
