M7 and M6

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I regretted I sold mine mint M6ttl for the purchase of M7, because there is no AE lock on the M7, I end up have to set the exposure in manual mode just like when I use the M6, except I paid a grand more.

Press the shutter halfway down!

I did, but din't work.

It has to work. Now, when you press the shutter halfway down, do you get the upper red dot to the left of the digits in the viewfinder? If you do, you have AE lock. If not, got get your camera repaired under warranty. And let us know. Anyway, there is no AE lock on the M6, right? Heck, there isn't even AE :-)

AE lock on the M6? Sure! Aim the central finder area at the subject area to be metered. Set the exposure on the camera. Now, recompose as desired. The exposure will automatically stay where you set it, thinks to the M6's auto-mechanical memory system. ;<)

Jia Shi is joking, right? If not, he needs to RTDM and not only the section on AE lock.

Jia:

I will trade you my M6TTL (black .72 in exellent condition) plus $1000 for your M7, which will make you whole again on this camera! Let me know if you would like to do this. Question: Is yours a black or chrome M7? And I am serious!

Cheers,

Please refer to Pg.94-95 of the M7 manual.

Jai, it's either a defective camera or user. Only two choices, so it should be easy to figure out. However, you make a good point about AE lock in general on the M7. Unlike many AE cameras, this one doesn't have a switch position for locking in an exposure reading for a multiple sequence of images at the same setting. For that you must revert to manual exposure control. You know, just like that $1,000. less expensive M6TTL you prematurely sold.

Marc, if it had what you say, it wouldn't be a Leica M, it would be at least a Contax G2 (great camera, BTW) or a big, heavy auto-everything SLR.
