Le Tiss Testimonial

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I noticed that the England 11 had no fewer than 11 current (Shearer) and ex toon players on at one time or another. 9 - 9 draw and it looks like Wor Al insisted on playing the full 90 minutes (and scored of course - don't know how many yet). Le Tiss scored and so did his brother and his 10 year old son (who got 4!) Nearly 32,000 - Saints second highest attendance.

For the record Shearer, Beardsley, Waddle, Gascoigne, Batty, Barnes, Pearce,Beresford, Rob Lee, Beasant and apparently Keegan who managed a goal too. I wouldn't have minded seeing them all playing together for the Toon in their prime - or even England - World Cup? - Nee bother!

Q) And when was Saints highest attendance?

A) You got it in one; against us last Saturday (mostly Toon Army, I'd imagine!).

Southampton's highest attendance last season was vs Toon as well, which is fantastic bearing in mind
a)the distance majority of toon fans will have travelled;
b)we always lose there;
c)it was in the middle of the petrol strike

You would think that there would be enough Man United fans on the South Coast to fill St Mary`s comfortably. By the way, what did those of you who went make of the new ground? I used to like the old one at least until the game got underway.

According to my sources, the testimonial was great fun. Most often heard chant of the evening was `Shearer`s gona get ya!`, whenever Shearer got anywhere near El Khalej. Apparently, at one point Shearer was was speeding towards El Kahalej for what would have been a high speed tackle in a proper game, but he pulled up short and turned away.

New ground is quite impressive, but characterless......as are most of the Saints fans. Some very cross Newcastle supporters when they ran out of food about thirty seconds into halftime. I hope they had eaten something on the train!

Southampton is a horrible place, brand new shopping centre or not! (:o|
