hi there - I am wondering if it would be possible for me to record music from my pc onto a dvd 120 minute disc (using a CD burner) and then play the disc on a standard CD player?

First of all DVD media size is NOT quoted in minutes but in size, and single-sided, single-layer DVD-R, -RW, +RW, and -RAM currently ARE all 4.7GB. And NO, you can't use a CD-burner; you'll have to use a DVD-burner. Lastly, record and extract all the CDDA you want now before the record companies flood the market with copy-protected audio CDs, slowly becoming vogue in Europe but not quite in North America.
