A tidy game and some good football. Toon always had the edge in territory and possession without carving out too many chances. So after 40 years as a fan, I get to see a United player holding silverware (1969's silverware was awarded away from home). Marvellous!

Steven Taylor looks like a guy who can become a top quality centre back - he was excellent as was his sidekick Carr. Up front Zola is very tall and slightly built (indeed I have seen more meat on a glass eye), skilful like Shola and CAN head the ball. His goal was a result of defensive slip up by Boy Utd. James Beaumont in the Toon midfield caught my eye. Very much in control on the ball and looked lively all night. His goal was one that Pedro himself would have taken pride in - it was a blinder. He shimmied past his man in the corner of the pen area and then brilliantly curled his shot right in the top corner - eat your hearts out first team - THIS was the goal of the season. O Brien (sorry Sunderland we have yet another one) looked very good wide left and put in a superb cross from a lost position which resulted in the Zola goal. He made similar chances once or twice which weren't converted.

Hard to say which of these players will make the grade. But they did look highly promising and we can look forwards with some confidence to producing a home grown star or three from this lot. Well done the bairns - I hope that several of them will hold silverware aloft again several times in their Toon careers.

Thanks for the report Jonno. I'm really sorry I had to miss it due to a family hiatus, but am thrilled nevertheless.

"Championees......!"

Wonderful news! Thanks for the report, Jonno! Hopefully it's only the beginning for us winning trophies in the 21st century.

Collin the goalie good player
Taylor center back biddly good player
Beaumont midfield good player - what a GOAL!!!!
O'Brien left winger good player
Guy forward good player
Zola forward good player
The rest are good players but you just can't make out the black numbers on the black n white so I couldn't tell who was who.

Man U were canny but second best

Goal of the Season imo
1) James Beaumont
2) Robert's free kick against Soothamton at the Leazers
3) Shearer against Villa.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Hardly a hint of the cynicism and professionalism that blights the big lads game a lot of the time these days.

Glad I went for the positive of the two minds I was in until about four o'clock.

Typical NUFC organisation though. No tickets on sale back end of last week when my ST renewal went in, but people turning up in droves at the last minute last night clutching tickets by the million, and being allowed straight in through the exits while the less fortunate of us missed the kick off through having to wait our turn to get to the turnstyle to be issued with a ticket from which the stub was duely removed, and the appropriate change of the proferred tens and twenties given, and no chance that the KO would be delayed.

Still worth the effort though, cos it was a great game. Some lovely joined up footbal, and the score could have been even higher if the finishing had been better.

Their efforts were mostly long range snap shots, one or two of which were quite near, but otherwise I think our defense handled them very well.

Hadn't a clue who was playing due to still being in the queue outside when they announced the teams so I couldn't tell you who stood out (apart from the unmistakeable Zola!). Good game tho' with some lovely passing and Beaumont's goal was absolutely superb. They did a lap of honour at the end and a couple of the lads threw their shirts into the crowd - only to have to go and get them back for the presentation! Another lap of honour with the cup this time - wonderful.

Good work by Irvine signing up a midget like Zola and passing him off as a bairn. Might be a job for the Italian maestro playing panto as a Crankies tribute act.

The two Zolas couldn't be more different to look at!

Went to the game and what a game it was. Can't add much to what has been said but have to say WHAT A GOAL!. An ecellent finish from the young Beaumont.
