Bobby on 5 Live right now saying Dyer's knee was jarred "extensively" and he desperately needs a scan. The FA will be taking over the scanning and examination. Bobby says there's a possibility of ligament and/or cartilege damage.

If there's any doubt, I hope he'll be won't be sent to the World Cup to make things worse. Otherwise we may as well fly him straight from Japan to Colorado. Maybe NUFC should just purchase a condo near Steadman's office? :-(

I saw a video of Beckham yesterday limping into a building.

How the hell do they expectsmeone whos is limping to play i the world cup! Yet we all know that he will and possibly end his career.

If there is something wrong with KD, he WILL also be rushed into the England squad and miss at the least next season for the toon.

I sometimes get small injuries in my foot/knee. I can still walk about and stuff without limping but know that if i play football that afterwards i will suffer for at least a fortnight.

David Beckham was limping and is expected to go to Japan and play on the highest stage possible.

I can't stand it!

KD isn't a first choice for England as far as I know as SGE is aiming to play Heskey on left wing with Fowler and Owen up front.

For this reason, he isn't vital to the team so if the injury is serious enough, Danny Murphy will probably come in to take his place.

Latest from BBC Sport:

Dyer's hopes in jeopardy

Kieron Dyer's World Cup dreams could be left in tatters on a day when England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson was anxiously awaiting damage reports. Dyer was stretchered out of Newcastle's game at Southampton, victim of a crude lunge by Southampton's Moroccan defender Tahar El-Khalej who was instantly dismissed by referee Andy D'Urso.

Initial indications from Newcastle manager Bobby Robson were not good.

Robson said: "I'm not pre-empting the situation but he could have some knee ligament damage.

"We have contacted the Football Association and they would like him to go to their medical team and be examined.

"We can take him back to Newcastle tonight and have his scan tomorrow, or leave him in the hands of the FA, as he's their player from now on."

"If there's internal damage to his ligaments and to his cartilage - which there is - his chances are gloomy."

"It would be a very cruel blow for him to miss the World Cup," said Robson of a player who was expected to be an automatic choice in Eriksson's team.

Robson added: "He was going to Ipswich tonight to get his gear ready for assembling with the squad on Monday," when England fly to Dubai as past of their World Cup preparation.

Only silver lining is that if he doesn't go to WC then at least no one will be in to buy him! :( Cynical I know - but I'm grasping at straws. I feel gutted for him.

Me too Lynda. Gutted.

Bobby was quoted saying KD was 'tearful'. I would bloody well be if something like this happened, and the plane was to take off on monday.

He might not leave us, but can we assume that he keeps bouncing back from serious injuries, season after season, mind and body intact? I hope he can..

I'm not having a go at Bobby Robson (who on earth would I be to do that!), but here's a quote from Gerard Houllier - [Liverpool had a lot more to play for; they had to make sure of 2nd. place (automatic Champions League) & they had to be totally professional in not 'gifting' anything to Ipswich] :

"We were mindful of the players going to the World Cup. We told them to tell us if they felt anything, any twinges, and we would get them straight off.

"That's what we did because there was no way that we would be taking any risks."

I guess I'm just gutted for Kieron Dyer, fingers crossed here :-(

You can't legislate for someone putting in such a bad tackle. To be honest - Dyer needed the match practice, he's hardly played for weeks! Plus he's a NUFC player, why shouldn't NUFC play him! He could be injured at any time, including in Japan.

I heard people on 606 criticising BR for playing him. Annoyed me.

You can't legislate for someone putting in such a bad tackle

You most certainly can. Bring back hanging.

The ref should have left him on the pitch - it wouldn't have been for long.

Hangings too good for them.

I still have to question YBR's decision to play LKD and Shay. I thought I'd read on .com that his reason for notplaying Andy O'Brien was due to him going to the WC - well maybe I misunderstood and it was just a csae of diarrhoea!! So why did he not also rest Little Kevin and Shaymus?

He went on to say he wanted to play his strongest team. Fair dos, if they played as a strong team, I might have bought that one. We had nowt to play for - even Gary Speed admitted this after some "flat performances" in training.

Perhaps it is just hindsight - but you can bet that YBR won't admit to it :-(

I atleast think Shay could have been rested. Not really far to never give Harper a chance. Ok, he if he was a lot worse then Shay then there is not reason really. But if we are going to keep the lad we have to keep him as happy as possible.

-- Anonymous, May 12, 2002

Also a little "funny" that Bobby said before the game something like this:

"No need to field a diffrent team, we want to win the game, if we dont field our strongest team we might end up losing 3-1"

So is Bobby Rosbon above criticism all of a sudden? Well I certainly will roundly criticise him for playing both Dyer and Given - it was crass, unthinking stupidity.

Who gives a rats who "pays their wages"? That is not at issue here. If we had needed points from this game I would have understood the decision. However, this could have been the pinnacle of their careers, and to take entirely unecessary risks in an end of season game that had no significant whatsover for NUFC, was bone-headed in the extreme - and Kieron Dyer may rue it for the rest of his life.

Yeh, but what about all the paying customers who turned up for the Premiership games yesterday Clarky? Are you saying that all the World Cup probables - and that includes most of the Arsenal team, should not have been played for fear of the sort of freak injury that happened to Dyer? I'm sure the Arsenal fans would have been a bit miffed if all of their WC players had not turned out. As far as I'm concerned, the international team is subservent to the clubs, not vice versa. Shoot me down in flames if you want.

-- Anonymous, May 12, 2002

I'm in the middle here to be honest.

The World Cup is a couple of weeks away yet so there is no need to rest him from a fitness point of view as he is hardly going to get fatigue from playing.

However you don't see tackles like El Khalej's every day so you can't really legislate it when making the decision to play him.

Personally I would have brought Dyer and Given off at half time.

Jacko - Arsenal did indeed 'rest' some of their players who were heading to the WC - including Seaman, Campbell, Lundberg and one other, I think Kanu. Given that most of their team are heading for the WC, it was probably difficult for them to do much more, and indeed doing more would have unfair to their fans - but at least there was a recognition of the potential problem and it was handled with some sensitivity.

Ours was a highly specific situation wherein we had only two players who were genuinely "at risk". A game for Steve Harper would have been a reasonable action in any event for such a meaningless game.

Regarding Dyer, who has only just made the squad by the skin of his teeth after two wretched seasons of injury, and has been nursing a groin strain anyway - there is absolutely no way I would ever have considered playing him yesterday. Jenas would have been a more than adequate stand-in in this delicate situation.

-- Anonymous, May 12, 2002

Dyer's Agent has said that the scan on Kieron's knee has indicated that the ligaments are only strained and that their is some fluid on the knee. The prognosis is that this with treatment this could be OK in 1-3 weeks, and they are hoping SGE will allow some time to more fully assess his likely rehabilitation.

Fingers crossed for the lad.

-- Anonymous, May 12, 2002

Clarky, you don't "rest" Kanu - you just have the good sense not to pick him!

-- Anonymous, May 12, 2002

You also have to remember Arsenal played on Wednesday, most of our lot hadn't played for 2 weeks, so "rest" is more appropriate for Arsenal's players.
