Chuck's New Forum Site

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread

It's WAY too late for me to be up, but I wanted to pass the word along that Chuck's new forum site is up and running. Here's the URL, and we're over there, too (this forum, that is):

http://homestead.mission4me.com/

So ... if you want to check it out, you can - if you don't, kewl! I'll be posting in both places, I imagine. Only thing about "over there" is that I don't think I can do the backup projects like I've done here. Just have to check it out later and see.

Anyway, have fun folks, and G'nite!

What backup projects do you mean? The new site is backed up daily. :- )

Kewl! Glad to hear it Chuck! Way to go, Chief!

Well, I am so bummed I am ready to leave the internet for good. New forum, can't post.........old friends going crazy and messing everyone up. God's blessings to all who would care to have them and I am quitely going to say good bye for now. My mail box is now full of virus and porn from someone who now has my home address because of an error from this moderator..........I JUST CAN'T TAKE IT ANY MORE.

well, we all know who someone is, and i assure you, you're not the only one having this problem. i'm very sad to see this happening to lusenet, and, being technology challenged as i am, worried about how i will do with the new forums:(

whos the "old friends" diane??

Folks, I didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest by telling you about Chuck's forum here. Anyone who frequents the forums knows about the other location (or should) from the CS posts. And I didn't intend to leave the impression that I wanted to "move over there" in place of our great forum here. I was just passing on the news.

I know I can't please everyone, and sometimes I make mistakes (sometimes BIG ones) that I can't correct - that's my human side showing through! If I've hurt or offended anyone, I can assure you it's never been intentional and when I'm wrong I try to be the first to admit it and apologize.

I started the Country Style Homesteading forum as a place for all of us to get together in the event that Country Side went KA-BANG in the middle of the night. I didn't (and still don't, really) know squat about moderating a forum, but I wanted to do whatever I could to insure that everyone wouldn't just disappear. And I'm still here enjoying all the posts I read every day! And I'll be here as long as LUSENET is. I hope everyone else will hang around, too, but if you feel the need to take a break or get completely away from the forums, I'll understand. I'll miss you - but I'll understand!

are you saying your moving with them or not then Phil? I know LUSENT is going to upgrade,, and once CF and CS leaves,, there shouldnt be ANY problem with LUSENT going down anymore

-- Stan (sopal@net-pert.com), May 10, 2002.

Stan ... the answer is in the post:

And I'm still here enjoying all the posts I read every day! And I'll be here as long as LUSENET is.

I've been in contact with Phil Greenspun and have an idea of the future of LUSENET "straight from the horse's mouth," so to speak. Thanks for asking!

cool, thanks Phil,, did you find some info on that CD ?? hope so,, if not,,I say you "violate" some cpyright laws :)

-- Stan (sopal@net-pert.com), May 10, 2002.

Thanks Phil for keeping this forum running for now. I know it's added work for you and it is appreciated. I'm trying to get the hang of the new forum, but to tell the truth, I just don't know. I know things change and progress and we should move forward, but tonight I have this overwhelming sense of loss.......Good night all.

-- Annie (mistletoe6@earthlink.net), May 10, 2002.

annie I am with you. I feel a real sense of loss. Almost like one of our horrible military moves across the continents only to hope to write my friends once a year! Anyway, in reading Diane's post, I hope to see her around, I have always enjoyed her posts. Don't know what all happened and don't want to know but all must admit that it is a shame. I hope Luneset erases half of the forums listed that I can't figure out what the purpose is. Might not be too smart but you tell me what all those weird forums are about in plain English!! Debbie in ok.

Hi ya Debbie! When I was writing that post, I was so sad that night. Felt like I lost my best friend. My computer can't handle the new site, but I honestly still like the format of these forums best. The other day Jay wrote a post on his site that made feel so much better and look at all this mess in a positive way. He pointed out, that now that we're not so crowded, we can once again spend a few days or more answering posts without having to read hundreds of them like CS was getting to be. Without CS on Lusenet, it makes our forums faster too. And the added benefit is, this is more like CS use to be. Cool, huh? Thanks Jay! :) If ya didn't notice, Phil starts an over-the-fence chat thread on Saturdays and we all pitch in on what we're up to. You'll recognize quite a few people here that posted or use to a long time ago on CS, so......you didn't have to move this time across country, just to a different neighborhood where you already knew good friends! :)

-- Annie (mistletoe6@earthlink.net), May 15, 2002.

Nice to see you here debbie........my dial up is so slow that the new site is just annoyingly slow. I am sure hoping we keep the "small town" flavor we are having now that the herd has left. Twas getting a bit crowded for me lately anyway. Nice folks, just way too many of them. Jay's post helped me also Annie :>)

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), May 15, 2002.

Hey folks ... good to see ALL of you here! I wasn't sure about what would happen here when CS got all moved and set up in the new location. I hoped that some folks would still visit and post, but I was prepared to let it go if it withered. I'm glad to see it's not withering!!!

Thought I would spend a little while here tonight before I put this bag -o- bones down for a nap. Not as a moderator - just plain ol' me jackin' my jaws. Quiet a few people have talked about the feeling of loss concerning the forum move and all that. I haven't been on here nearly as long as some of you have, but I sure know what you mean! My DW and I were talking today about the forums and how things are now compared to when we started just a few short months ago. Different is one way to put it ... uneasy and unsettled. When Ken ran CS there weren't too many times I'd go looking for a post that was there yesterday and not be able to find it today. Pretty much knew that I could go catch up on something I'd looked over a day or so before. I don't know if he caught all the "nasties" before they hit the air, or what, but it ran pretty smooth I thought. After he left, it seemed like everything got uprooted. Never knew if what you were looking for would be there or not. That's partly what prompted me to start doing the backup of the forums ... as long as I had it on CD, I could find whatever I wanted when I wanted. I'd heard some folks say they had ALL the posts emailed to them, too. Can't even imagine having that many messages in my email to go through every day :-)! Then there was all the concern about losing the archives and all that great information shared in the past, when all someone had to do was tell folks that as long as the information was backuped and saved on CD it would be safe and sound. I think I finally posted several posts to try and help ease people's minds, but it bothered me that it wasn't made clear from the start. Of course, I could have overlooked something, too ... very possible!

Anyway, I'm not saying Chuck's doing a bad job or anything - not at all. I am somewhat computer literate and I know that what he's doing (and whoever is helping him) in running the new site is a LOT of work! All I'm saying is that I get an uneasy feeling about the whole thing.

You know ... I think I just figured it out! Here, unless you know how to add all the pictures, emoticons, html, etc., what you get is plain and simple text information. No distractions. I think there are so many "fancies" on the new site that (besides being really slow) it distracts from the message of the post. I know it really bugs me when I'm reading a post and all of a sudden there's this colorful, extra large, bold print in my face because someone enhanced the font. Usually when I run across those, my brain shuts down and I click the back button and go to another post or another forum or just close the browser altogether, most likely missing out on some really great information. Not that it's a bad thing ... just very distracting to me, ya know? That's all.

And I don't really know why I felt the need to post this tonight. I just hadn't expressed much about the whole deal and thought I'd sit around and visit with my friends about it for a while. Thanks for being there, folks .. you're the greatest!

-- Phil in the Land of OZ (mac0328@planetkc.com), May 15, 2002.

Phil, you're the greatest too!!! :) I've always felt and described this site like the old CS. It's like you're sittin on the porch visiting. Same with Jay's place. It's like I'm visiting from house to house. The new forum makes me think of a great convention hall with all the booths. It's too big and crowded for some of us simpler folks.

-- Annie (mistletoe6@earthlink.net), May 16, 2002.

Phil, that's how I feel about the new site too, very distracting. I guess if you're really "into" computers that it's probably a neat place but I just want simplicity. I like Lucenet much better where the posts just pop up quickly for easy reading and easy posting. I don't mean to take away from all the work that Chuck has put into it and I know there are a lot of people that do and will like it better there, it's just not my prefered choice.

-- Terry - NW Ohio (aunt_tm@hotmail.com), May 16, 2002.

After playin around on the new site [like a kid with a new toy] I've found that it's slow and difficult for dumb old hillbillys to navigate.I agree that Lusent is much simpler to use and the font is big enough for me to read.

Chuck has done a great job on the new site but I think I'll leave it to the younger smarter crowd and stick with something I'm capable of usin.

Hey Hoot, I think I saw a chair on the porch with your name on it! It's a comfortable one, too! Good to see ya.
