Poe was not on drugs. His drinking did nothing to help the writing process. Check out Stephen King's "On Writng: A Memoir of the Craft" for a common sense, personal reflection on the issue of addiction and writing.

No. The rumor that he did drugs was a flat out lie put into his first biography, which was written by R.W. Griswold, who was a literary rival of Poe's who disliked him intensly. It was one of many slanderous things Griswold wrote into that first biography. Poe did have a drinking problem, but that resulted in binging, during which time he really didn't write. Oddly enough, most of Poe's writing was done during relatively peaceful times in his life, although peaceful didn't always mean happy. As with many of the dead great artists, it is more fun to swap amusing stories that tear them down, then to actually understand them. There are several biographies, as well as several websites that do him justice.
