53 MZ3 flash on M6TTL

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

If this question has already been asked I apologise. Not being a flash user on my Leica, convenience has dictated that I should use one on an upcomming wedding shoot. I normally use an F4 + CT60-1. Travel constraints dictate on this occasion I take the M6 outfit only.

So the question is, how have folk found this new fash mounted on M6TTL to work in the field? Would you rather a smaller unit? say 40? I figured the 20 although handy, in reality to be too small as a sole flash sourse. Bounce being regarded as essential as fixed units like the 20 end up to the sie of the subject when Vertically formated.

Thanks Greg.

I assume you mean the 54MZ-3. Looks very big to mount directly on an M6 without a bracket. Will bounce flash work at the wedding anyway? It depends a lot on the camera to subject distances, ceiling height and color etc. The SF20 with SFILL will work as well as any direct on camera flash - but I agree you need to take the flash off for verticals. If you use an extension cord you can manage it easily. The 54MZ3 is an impressive unit, but my experience of weddings is that you are lucky if you can find a good bounce surface (I use the Omnibounce when I can) so you usually have to rely on good diffusers to soften the light. If you agree with this analysis then it is really a matter of how aggressive you want to look - bracket plus huge flash, or the more subtle SF20 with SFILL-type approach - it is up to you.
