The Weather...I know

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I'm complaining again, as I sit here watching the downpour. You can hardly see out , after another couple inches today. It's coming down so hard. We are supposed to have close to 48 or no rain, that will be a blessing. And I am grateful to have rain, but...

God used the weather repeatedly to get people's attention in the Bible, I think He's trying t tell us something again. Starting Sat through Mon morning we're supposed to have really heavy rains.

Then there's the drought, Not sure which is worse, too much or not enough. Can't grow much either way. Guess if worse comes to wrose, we'd all learn about eating weeds and such. There's plenty of water to drink for people and animals, but is it contaminated? So maybe too much rain is better than drought, but then the people that get flooded out don't think so, I'm sure.

Guess I'm just of little faith today, we still have plenty of time to put out gardens. Maybe it's the gardener in me.

Please pray that the weather will settle itself down and gardens/fields will prosper and we'll learn whatever it is that we need to learn. Thanks

The sun is actaully shining here this morning and I am headed out to work in my gardens a bit...But I think your rain is headed my way this afternoon. Oh well, we can't change the weather so we just have to deal with it I guess...

I live in farm country and the farmers say never complain when it rains. So I try not to. I am sure drought is much worse. In the Bible drought sometimes lasted 7 years where as the great flood lasted 40 days. A big difference in duration isn't it? Fires are such a problem in drought too, besides the growing of food is greatly hindered. I'm glad to say that our lawn mower is running again and I get to mow today. It's been two weeks and the grass is tall. Should bale it probably and feed it to the chickens. Only 40 degrees this morning so won't have the old shorts on today!

The last two nights we have had 4 bad storms roll thru here. The first one Tuesday night about 4:30pm had 85 mph wind and hail. It totally destroyed the swing set, hammak and most of the yard toys. Not to mention hail damage to the cars and tractor. We have had so much rain that our newly dug pond is over flowing and it is very deep!! Last night the first storm that rolled thru brought with it rotation and nasty looking sky. We had no tornados touch down but I watched one going up and down from the celler steps. !!! I could use a night with no rain or storms now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Its raining here today too.....again......again......sigh.

I have had a major garden disaster-last week when we had the wind storms part of the fence in the back of my garden came down, and I didn't notice for a couple of days, deer have gotten in and eaten EVERYTHING I had out. Plus catapillers got into my bath tub garden and stripped it. Someone said that bT worked well, but I have found that the shop vac does a good job. So, today, hopefully, I will sit on the porch and watch it rain and plant up a bunch of little peat pots and start all over.

I had a wonderful night last night! I sat out on our screened in porch and watched a huge storm go past. I love storms! (which helps when you live in tornado alley) I wanted to be a tornado chaser when I was younger but life had other ideas.

We all feel the same about snow in May! (Just ask Tracy.)

My hubby made a quick trip to Kansas this week and got to drive through those storms both ways!

Personally, I'll do a happy dance when it finally rains again:) We were asked to fast and pray for moisture at church this last week. It was brought to my attention that meant snow. lol. I just couldn't do it. I prayed for RAIN :)

This morning at 6AM it was cloudy, breezy and looked like it would storm any minute..our forecast for NE Bama is rain starting this afternoon and ending sometime Sunday night..but now at 10AM, it's sunny and the birds are singing and those gusty winds are gone for the time being..but I know better now..they'll be BACK soon...I finally got one of my hearts' desires yesterday..a tornado shelter..yeah!!!!! I sat on my porch in the 90 degree heat and watched as the men dug a nice hole where we used to have an inground pool..it was ironic because last year when we had the pool taken out, I had asked DH to whack the ugly sidewalk which now led to nowhere from the porch..he said he'd "get around to it" but hadn't yet..so now the sidewalk leads right up to the steel door of the shelter and looks as if it were planned that way! LOL....Anyway, the other funny part was we had painstakingly tossed chicken-manure straw and sawdust and wood ashes into that spot all last year because I planned to put my herb garden there....you should have seen all that GOOD dirt they dug up! I was so proud!!!! oh well...I cannot crawl into the herb garden when the sirens go off...This shelter is half undergrouns and half above ground..the half above ground is banked with tons of dirt, so the only thing showing is the roof and the door..the door has two cool small rectangular panels inbetween the steel made from the same stuff they used for space shuttle windows so you can look out (if you care to) and see if the storm is over..I LIKE that idea..There are three wide steps and a handrail, so I can go down on my rear-end if I'm having a bad day, and it is only about 15 feet from the front porch. We have plently of F3 and F4 tornados go through here to justify one...two months before we moved here, there were eight folks killed on Easter Sunday when a F5 ripped through the neighborhood..everyone had 45 minutes warning time it was coming, but most folks had nowhere to go, so they went to one of the churches, and the church took a direct hit. There were fewer folks killed by these storms in TX and MO when I lived there than here in NE Bama! Who knew? So this week when those sirens go off, we can sit in the shelter with the panting, drooling dogs instead of that flimsy inside closet..LOL....I sure feel blessed!

I'm in N.E. IN and, imagine this, it's RAINING! I figure by the time all this stops and the sun comes out long enough to dry my land out enough to mow I'll have to brush hog it at about 10-12 inches (however high I can set it) and go about 3 mph then drop about three inches, do it again, etc. I'm guessing about 40-50 hours of mowing just for the first time and it's only eleven acres!

Melissa- I was trying to divert some of the rain to our farm for you- fortunately we are getting plenty of our own, so I can only help but so much. Glad you enjoyed the sunshine while it lasted. If there is one thing I will do- it is to start collecting rain water, and the creeks' water that overflow onto our land. I remember in 1989, when we moved to our suburban home, it was so wet that I couldn't cut our back grass. I don't thimk the previous owner cut it after the day he accepted our contract.

Alberta could export snow. Really. There is enough piled around my house alone to see to the irrigation needs of a small county.

I hate snow. Truly, I do. It could come Christmas Eve and melt Boxing Day, and I would be PERFECTLY happy.

I want to plant my GARDEN!!!!
