The 420EX is the only Canon flash with an AF assist light which covers all 7 points of the Elan 7E's autofocus system. But which flash is best for you really depends on how much money you want to spend and how much weight you want to carry around.

220EX - tiny, lightweight, not much light output.

550EX - big, heavy, full manual controls, expensive, wireless slave and master.

420EX - midweight, no manual controls, decent output, wireless slave but no wireless master.

E and EZ series units - not recommended as they don't support E-TTL flash.

Sigma EF 500 Super - not made by Canon, big, heavy, manual controls, cheap as a 420EX.

Big heavy?? as compared to the 550EX? I have both flashes in front of me. The sigma is lighter. The sigma also has a built in optical slave. You can use it with other cameras, and strobes for fill.

I have them both, and I am selling the canon flash.

For general purpose : 420EX. For more control and more power : 550EX. Note that the AF focus assist beam of the 550 is not available for the top and bottom AF points, just the 5 horizontal ones.

Well, fair enough. I always think of the Sigma 500 EF Super as weighing as much as a heavier flash like the Canon 430EZ, but I guess it's just a bit lighter. Nonetheless, all these flash units tend to unbalance smaller cameras like the Elan 7, I find.
