Poe disappeared en route to his home city. At that time he had lived through a brief period of great physical and emotional stress after his wife's death. His bouts of alcoholism and lifetime of poverty had damaged his health considerably though Poe was disposed to athleticism and good health. So, when he appeared delirious and deathly ill you can say something pushed him over the limit, possibly being forced to drink as part of a brutal vote fraud kidnapping called "cooping."

The medical diagnosis at the time does not satisfy all questions, nor could Poe explain what happened before he died.
