United's all-time top 100 May 6 2002

By The Evening Chronicle

Nominate your favourite player for our United Hall of Fame.

Who are Newcastle United's best players of all time? We want YOUR help to find out!

We are planning to compile a list of United's top 100 players and feature them in a super series in The Pink over the summer. We have put together a panel of football experts which includes Newcastle United programme editor Paul Tully and the club's official historian Paul Joannou, as well as our own team of Toon writers - Alan Oliver, John Gibson and Miles Starforth - to help us put the list together. But we want YOU to tell US which players should feature in this list.

I like the 'tell us who should be on the list...and then we'll decide anyway' bit. But they're not wrong, are they - I mean, do you really think they'd get 100 different names if they left it up to the punters? Tell me who anyone would vote for other than:

Gallacher (Hughie, not Kevin)
Milburn
Beardsley
Shearer

All right, Gazza, Smith, Green, I'm sure we can get a few, but not 96. Remember, your not just voting for players in a top 10 or all-time XI, you're voting for your single favourite player of all time.

The wording is also confusing - is you look at the whole piece, they talk about your 'favourite' player, but elsewhere about the 'best' player. Not necessarily the same thing. I think Chris Waddle remains my favourite player, but I wouldn't suggest he's the best ever to don the b&w.

Chronological bias will play a part as it always does with these things. I imagine Shay Given will get a few nominations from the kids, but Colin Veitch is only going to be in the list if Paul Joannou puts him there, and players like him, Wilf Low and Neil Harris aren't exactly going to scoop the popular vote, are they?

I think we should all vote for Frank Pingel.

I adored Andy Cole at the time.

I loved Gazza to bits.

Personal favourites thro the years went from Nattrass to Cassidy to Wharton to Michael ONeill and Gazza, to Cole to all of them.

If I had to pick one though it would be Tino, just loved his attitude to life and skills on the pitch, unique

Loved Tino to bits - in fact part of my hatred of what TSM did was in his appaling misuse of such a talent. Definitely in the top 100 and would have probably become my all time favourite if he had been allowed to stay and show what he could do.

Of the players I saw :-

Favourite player - Frank Clark - just always there in those first seasons of mine. When the ball goes towards the left back area I still look out for him. I'd love to meet him so I can ask him about my dad.

Best Player - Peter Beardsley

It's good that Joannou is on the panel. His selection from the Toon's history will be invaluable and ensure that the likes of Veitch, McCracken and so many others will be accorded their due place in the United pantheon. But doubtless the list will still be skewed towards the more recent history, which is understandable, as I must be the only person left who actually saw Veitch play. OOOOOHWADDAGIVEAWAY!!

Must admit there are only two possible choices - Frank Pingle (already mentioned) or Paul Stimpson.

Who`s Paul Stimpson? You`re not thinking of Mark Stimpson are you? A left sided fore-runner of Warren Barton in many ways.....

You're overlooking KK's star buys - Darren MacDonagh and Peter Garland!

Like Macbeth, I've had various favourites throughout mt extended time supporting the Toon. Dave Hilley was an early favourite, then "Jinking" Jimmy Smith, Wyn Davies, the immortal Tony Green, Supermac, Alan Shoulder, Paul Goaddard and Gazza for saving us from relegation, Peter Beardsley, Les, and of course our very own Alan Shearer.

My all time favourite could just possibly be Wyn Davies. Regarding the the Best Players I've seen playing for us I can't separate Beardsley and Tony Green

Peter Beardsley, easy for me.

100 does seem like a lot of players, I bet a lot of fans would struggle to name that many.

Beardsley for me an aal. My all-time fave and first NUFC autograph as a kid!

My first ever favourite was Barry Thomas. I think Supermac in full flight is one of the most exciting things I've seen in a black and white shirt but he's turned into such a self-opinionated git hasn't he? Beardsley and Shearer have to be top because they are Geordies.

I think Clarky has already written my list, I would probably put Alan Suddick up there and I will never forget McNamee. The only game I ever saw Wor Jackie play in live was his testimonial but the odd flashes I did see on the B&W box plus what I read about him has to make him my all time favorite.

In chronological order ish

Alan Suddick - wasted talent Pop Robson Wyn Davies Jim Smith Tony Green Supermac gap coz Gordon Lee removed all personalities Alan Shoulder Beardsley/Keegan Gap again Beardsley Tino YBR - or Al if it has to be a player

I couldn't think of anybody in the gaps - there were probably some heroes.
