What is the deal with the "tulip" lens hoods?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

What is the advantage of the "tulip" lens hoods with the slits down the sides. Wouldn't the slits let light in? Any info or links would be greatly appreciated.

Imagine using a standard 2"-deep round hood on a wide-angle lens. You'd get vignetting in all four corners, right? So you'd cut away the four corners, little by little, until the vignetting stopped-- perhaps as close as 1/2" out from the front element. Result? A tulip- shaped hood that would keep a lot more sun off the front element than would a hood that was only 1/2" deep all around.

That is the most clear and concise answer to what seemed like a simple question I have recieved. Thanks.

While the explanation is great, the "tulip" seems impossible to locate. It seems that every pro sports shooter has a tulip on his lens. Where do you buy them?
