Is this board planning on moving off Lusenet?

Has any thought been given to moving this board off the server before the big crash?

Well, we've got the ez board site; which for some reason, hates my guts this week!! As to going elsewhere, I don't know what Joy has in mind. Is Singletree making the move to Chuck's new location for CS? I really wouldn't be comfortable going anywhere with BTS if Chuck has his fingers into it; or could get them into it. And since he's already paid the fee for the new site, I imagine that would be one of his requirments for using it.

I'll probably go over to check out Country Homesteading (Phil and Cheryl's board); but I doubt that I'll even look at CS. I have a CD that Phil made, of the old posts on there. There really is nothing else that I'm interested in over there. Wish there was some way that Phil could copy this forum to CD as well; but I wouldn't want it on the disc with the others and available to just anyone; so I guess that everything will just be lost with the crash. Sigh.

Polly, I am working on backing this up...........it is just not quite as simple as karen made it out to be when a forum is password protected. I have not ever had trouble saving stuff, whole categories, according to her directions.............but........not this one. Am saving one thread at a time, so it is going fairly slowly. Hopefully I can get it done before the "big one". :>(

WHAT??!!!I have been under a rock this week so....what big crash???

-- Anonymous, May 03, 2002

Friends, I know I don't contribute a whole lot to this forum, but I'd sure appreciate it if somebody would email me if the forum disappears, and give me the url for the new one! (jumpoff@echoweb.net)

I suspect I'll be available to spend more time here after a few years, when I get the landscaping done...

I will ask Joy about it when I talk to her on the phone tomorrow, hope I can remember to! (there, I wrote it on the back of my hand. Maybe that will help.)

She's having MORE trouble w/the computer. She got a phone message after quittin' time today (Friday) saying it would be twice as much to fix it and they wanted an okay before they started,"but we don't work on the weekends, and oh yeah, I won't be in on Monday or Tuesday either...." That sort of thing.

Joe, I have your email address in my hard drive list, and probably on disk as well. I will try to check everything out and make sure it is up to date as soon as I get back online.

I have no plans for moving this, because I didn't know that the BIG CRASH was definite -- is it? My current thought is just to go with EZBoard, and look into other options later. I would pay the fee to EZBoard to get rid of the ads if that became our main board. I know people who have their own boards that I can check with when I get back online, maybe even before then, to see what our own site would cost.

Also, as soon as I have my 'puter back, I think I could just copy and paste whole threads to EZBoard. Maybe I'm fooling myself, but I think it could be done. I'll be checking my CatFlunky email, even if the board is down, so you can try reaching me that way. But I won't be online every day.

The new CS board is one of 3 options I am evaluating for A Country singletree to move to for service. The impending move is why I established the homepage to allow easier linking to site alternatives.

I echo Teri..what big crash?

-- Anonymous, May 04, 2002

I personally don't believe that there is going to be a "big crash", but we may end up having to pay. I like this format and would just as soon pay here.

I have this forum 1/2 of the way saved to disk by the way. When I am finished I will make copies for anyone who wants them.

Thanks, Joy. Big crash? Don't know; just that there's been lots of talk about greenspun not being maintained anymore?

I'm with Diane...I wouldn't mind paying a little to stay right here!! It's well worth it!

The Countryside Forum migration has begun. Countryside and the majority of the offshoot forums are starting to transfer over to a new site run by Chuck. Although it is convenient to have all of the forums in one place, there are some issues that would make me uncomfortable with BTS moving there as well.

1) While the individual moderators still moderate their own lists, Chuck, as system administrator, can moderate ALL the lists.

2) Chuck also has the power to ban users. The ban is not forum- specific, so if you're banned from one forum you're banned from all of them.

3) It does not appear to be possible to password protect a forum.

4) There is a language censoring feature which is univeral across all the forums. Cuss words are automatically replaced with the phrase "potty-mouth".

Sherri, there are multiple other problems as well. I don't care what forum moves there, I doubt that I will. I was a logged on user and could not post today. I am thinking that after this whole mess of my box filling with virus and porn (we are talking my PRIVATE isp box) that I will no longer participate in boards that are not secure and passworded. I am ordering the latest backup CD from Phil, and that will most likely be the end of it for me. I am actually not even sure that the only culprit is stan at this point.............that last I knew, he didn't have the tech skills to pull off some of the stuff that is being done. It's just not worth it any more, was nice while it lasted but all good things come to an end eventually I guess.

Diane, I was talking with my friend Liz on the phone last night and she's having the same sort of problem. Her hotmail account is getting in excess of 300 spam porno emails a day. She's not on any of the forums here at lusenet. She said that this started about a week ago. So it may just be an internet thing in general and not you in particular.

Hotmail has always been a problem........this is my home one that only family and a few friends have......you have it, and a few forum moderators and a couple others from these boards, that's all. Never got a virus before except by accident from a friend who got one in her computer. This is a deliberate attack which calls me by name. I have sent them all on to my son-in-law to see what can be done. I am so sick of all the alarms going off every time I check e-mail!!! If it continues, I will be contacting my server and seeing if I can change my address with them. It all started right after Phil sent out that link to the backup forum and it had everyones address on it. I e-mailed him from "home" about the backup CD. That list was big, stan was on it and so was Joel and a couple other of my good buddies that I tend to piss off on a regular basis. I truly wish I could believe that it were all coincidental......so strange!!!

Sorry you are having problems with that guy by the way. It always amazes me the skill some people have of making themselves look like the innocent injured party and you look like some sort of major problem maker. My granny always told me to live my life in such a way that it made it clear that they were liars. Not always easy to do when you really want REVENGE!!!! lol

Does anyone know if Chuckie is required to remove the Countryside forum from Lusenet, or cannot he just take his crew and go away, leave it there for those who are not interested in the present drama? I'm sure search engines would continue to have references to it for quite some time, and it could still be put to some use?

-- Anonymous, May 12, 2002

I know he isn't allowed to take the Coutryside name with him; and I thought that the mag didn't want any connection with the forum at all anymore (can you blame them - sheesh, what a shining reflection on their name - NOT!) I would suppose that someone would have to contact the mag and see if they would be willing to allow it to continue; it would need a new moderator in any case.

I just tried to find CS, and it was gone. I did find it down under private forums and got in with no trouble. The option of posting new questions has been removed, but I copied a link to still do it anyway. If you want that, it's

http://hv.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-post-new.tcl?topic=Countryside

Went and looked at Chuck's conglomeration. I doubt I'll ever be posting there. It just would take too much time, and I have a fast cable connection.

-- Anonymous, May 13, 2002

I just noticed that also, Joy. I have CS saved in a folder and can still get there, but is Chuck trying to discourage folks from asking questions or posting answers on CS?? I like Aunty Em's Big Brother comparison :-)!!

-- Anonymous, May 13, 2002

Well...forget that! I can't get there anymore either :-(!!! Bummer!

-- Anonymous, May 13, 2002

Me neither. Oh well; better a quick and painless death, than a prolonged and fetid rotting of the soul. Now, where did I read that quote?

Phil still has CD's; BTW.

-- Anonymous, May 13, 2002

CS is passworded now -- I guess that's one way to keep people out!

-- Anonymous, May 13, 2002

Just for curiosity's sake I went to the Countryside Magazine website. They no longer have a link to the forum there.

-- Anonymous, May 14, 2002

I've been away for awhile so this will probably sound stupid, but "who is Chuck" and why does he have control over the Countryside archives? And why did CS move?

OMG Poor Judy!! Where does one begin?! "Who is Chuck??" That's so precious!! I told you he just appeared recently!! Haha.......

You'll have to read through the threads to get a gist of it, and if you're still confused we'll be glad to fill you in. You missed alot of drama!!

Great to hear from you !! Where are you NOW?

Blessings,

Hi Judy,

Chuck is the current moderator of the Countryside forum. Due to the unstable nature of the Lusenet server a concensus of the board felt like it was necessary to move to a more reliable server. This is being done now. The process is not complete. When it's finished the old Countryside archives will be available again.

Also due to the headaches that the Countryside forum was causing the publisher of the magazine of the same name (i.e. the forum's owners) they wanted nothing more to do with it and agreed to let it continue to exist providing the forum changed its name and was no longer associated with the magazine. For this reason the forum is now calling itself Homesteading Today and may be presently found at -

http://homestead.mission4me.co m/

It's different than the old forum, for both better and worse, but it's there.

Just wanted to try to give it to you straight.

........Alan.

Thanks Earthmamma, I'm back home in Louisiana for about a month now. My husband injured his knee at work (about three weeks after I got to Washington last year), he had surgery the middle of March. We decided to come home for him to recuperate and it looks like it will take longer than expected.

Amazing how things work out, I am temping at my old job, same desk, same computer even. Never thought I would be here again. But it's different because I am different and that's a good thing.

I am not surprised that CS would divorce themselves from the forum, it had only gotten worse with time and couldn't have been a bonus for the magazine anymore.

I didn't even know anything about all the happenings until I got an email today inviting me to the new forum for Countryside. Huh! I just got through reading that thread on who's here to try to figure out what's going on.

It's good to be home, but I saw a beautiful part of the country and was especially awed by the Columibia River Gorge and the Cascade Mountains.

Thanks Alan, I like a straight shooter. I must have been in the process of posting in response to EM post and missed yours initially.

Forums are like anything else, they change and evolve. Some like the changes and stay and some don't. I had rarely even looked at CS for awhile and then last fall when I went "on the Road" with my husband and his job, I hardly had time to check my email much less participate in a forum. I tried to check in here as often as I could, but didn't have much time to post.
