Go to Asia and find a bargain SVCD/DVD/VCD player there...

Recent Pioneer DVD players like DV-533K and DV-233 and JVC XV-S42 and XV-S62 can and will play properly-made SVCDs just fine (playable files in MPEG2 or MPEGAV).

Apex and Sampo both make players that support a wide variety of formats, including SVCD. Apex may be sold under a different name in Germany, such as Hiteker. As Mehmet suggested, Pioneer DVD players do support SVCD, but Apex and Sampo are cheaper and offer you the ability to change your firmware and run the player in multi-region mode. Some models and firmwares support miniDVD playback. http://www.dvd-wizards.com/darrenk is a good source for firmware info. One bit of warning - Apex multi-disc DVD players are of very poor quality and I don't recommend buying them. The single disc players are fine, except for the 7701 model which has a lot of problems. This model supposedly plays SACD and DVD audio in addition to the usual video formats.

I have a JVC XV-S62 and am having a terrible time getting it to play SVCDs. It constantly stutters(audio&video) every 2-3sec. Have tried everything to get it to work right and it wont.
