I was given some sunflower seeds (I've never grown any before). These sunflowers are supposed to be a single flower head (10-12 in. in size) with no side branches, on stalks that were to be about 3-4 foot high. The veriety is unknown. I've looked at the packet for sale in stores, & they say to plant 2-3 feet apart. They don't tell me if that is between the rows, or between the seeds in each row (or both). How do you plant (space) your sunflower seeds? What would you recommend?

I put mine closer together than that. More like 1 foot or less. If you have alot, growing them closer together will help them support each other when it's windy out.

Hi----I use 3 rows of sunflowers as a fencing to divide property lines--& it sure is pretty also-- & we use the seeds & so there is also plenty for the birds etc/etc/---

Hubby tills a long row about a block long--or so--& I plant them close-in three rows-it makes a huge divider fence---if some are way too close when they come up----when they are about a foot tall-- I transplant them to some where else----they support each other & make a fence no one tries to go through & it definds the property line----

At the end of the rows I have a piece of horse drawn equipment---with holly hocks & a bird feeder----etc/etc/----people stop & take pictures all the time--it really is beautiful----the birds & butterflys all love it---then I harvest the seeds for feeding birds in the winter----

It is hard to mess up sunflowers!!!!!! But if they are top heavy they either need a fence to support them or each other---that is why I plant mine so close---- best wishes---

When I plant a sunflower house, I space them just a few inches apart.
