I made a pretty decent "Drag Mat" with the help of the old lady. Acquire 3 sleeping pads (1/2 inch thick)from a camping store or a military surplus catalog. These are usually about 24" wide and long enough for most any rifle. Cut them down so that they are about a foot or so wide. You should have two strips that are about 3" longer than your rifle and one strip that is about a foot longer than the two strips. Cut the longest strip about 1/4" deep, 12" or so from one end so that it folds easily. The longest strip will be in the middle, the rifle will lie on top of it, the extra foot of the middle strip will fold over the butt of the rifle, and, ultimately, the other strips will fold over each other (much like folding a letter into an envelope). Now encase these pieces with some suitable material (I used denim--I know, not waterproof but the foam is). The rifle is now secured with a 3/4 nylon belt at the grip, the muzzle sits in a pocket at the top(I used umbrella material for this), and elastic loops are sewn into the denim to hold some rounds. Sew in handles and shoulder straps and attach velcro to keep the flaps closed.

canvas works well for water resistance and abrasion resistance id use that if i were you.you might want to make it with some netting on the outside shell tocamoflage it too, also makeit with inside pockets to hold small items the one i have has padding but thats optional you can get some good ideas at www.blackhawk.com
