It's back! Hopefully it will stay this way!

Glad the forum is back. I was forced to actually focus on work related issues for too long...

Great Forum - pity about the server and super-dumb server admin. Sheesh, how can a server crash and it take 2 days for the admin to notice?...

-- Andrew Nemeth (azn@nemeng.com), May 01, 2002.

I actually went out and took some pictures. The experience was very interesting.

Hey... those comments are NOT called for Andy.

First, as a server owner/administrator, I know the problems involved in keeping a server going and on the net. I have to deal with not only hardware, but my own software, and the service provided others. Its not a matter of noticing, its a matter of FIXING that takes time.

Secondly, the price of admission here is free. People are donating time, services, hardware, software, blood sweat and tears, to give you the little bit of blank space that you used to snub their efforts.

If you dont like the service, or the price, go build your own server, write your own software, get your own T1 line, and take it to the public, and keep it running 24/7/365.

In the interim, I sold all my Leica stuff and bought a clutch of Canon Rebels. Kind of like high-end disposable cameras, you know. (God, it seems so long since everyone's been gone...I'll bet Alfie has grown.) Welcome back, everyone.

Yeah, I actually had to face reality for a couple of whole days - I hate when that happens.

-- Ronald Wills (youngdeer@earthlink.net), May 01, 2002.

Alfie may have grown, but have PINHEAD, Sait, and Phil Mean the" Skitzo" grown any feelings yet?

-- Kristian (leicashot@hotmail.com), May 01, 2002.

Let sleeping dogs lie, Kristian.

-- Dave Jenkins (djphoto@vol.com), May 01, 2002.

Okay, now that the forum is back, I'm gonna sell the Canon Rebels and buy an M7 with a 50mm lens:

Should I get silver or black?

Should I get a Summicron or an Elmar?

You guys are too funny! This forum has become one of my favorite net stops. In its absence, I wound up buying a Rollei on eBay. Idle hands are the devil's workshop. I also ordered 250 sheets of enlarging paper from B&H. The server will go down again, and I'll get into the darkroom!

-- Phil Stiles (Stiles@metrocast.net), May 01, 2002.

Thanks to the owner/administrator for providing this service. This is the best Leica forum on the Web.

First of all, Charles, you are not the server admin here - are you?

Secondly, this is hardly the first time the greenspun host has died. It appears to routinely crash at least once a month - for days at a time.

And thirdly, I maintain an extensive online presence - including a detailed Leica FAQ. Outtages for my site are roughly 5-10 minutes per year. Ah yes, but my particular server admin knows the hell what he is doing... ;?)

-- Andrew Nemeth (azn@nemeng.com), May 01, 2002.

Ssshhh.... let's keep it calm. We don't know what happened, so let's not spend time blaming anyone. The good news is that we're back up.

-- Tony Rowlett (rowlett@mail.com), May 01, 2002.

Tony keep up the efforts its appreciated. Time off the computer is quite beneficial. I got some real work done and had time to fly over to DAG's so that I could get the flex Cla'd. 30years before it's first cla is not a bad track record. Down time is good sometimes :-))

-- Andy Wagner (awagner@midwest-express.com), May 01, 2002.

Good to see it back. I was resorting to late-night television and (ack!) photo.net to keep me amused. (Shooting and darkroom time take precedence over forum time even when it's up and running.

-- Mike Dixon (mike@mikedixonphotography.com), May 02, 2002.

No...lol...No Andy, not an admin here by any means (I have enough headaches keeping MY servers going!)

#1 problem - the routing to my ip, thru the provider. It seems like this happens with the Miami routers on a regular basis (level 3 stuff).

#2 problem (close second) - garbage locking up my local router, here in the office. Normally it can recover if the rate of error is not too bad, but when it gets excessive... she locks up solid, and has to be rebooted.

Both of those are beyond my fingertips to correct. Alas, I'm forced to use a provider I can afford, so have to take what they are willing to give me. We did go down for nearly 10 days once - but usually its an hour or two, or if the router locks up, as soon as I get in work, or get up in the morning.

Lemme just put it this way -- the hard way -- I noticed this too, having tried out my daily visit about a dozen times... but... after I never got in here I didn't worry at all because knowing this always happens again and again, I knew we'd just have to wait a day or two and then things would be back to usual.

Since many here seem to miss the forum a lot when it is off, this experience should be reason enoúgh to further civilize the way we are dealing with each other here.

No more flaming and philistic nonsense, please.

Best wishes

K. G., you mean me?

-- Michael Kastner (kastner@zedat.fu-berlin.de), May 02, 2002.

While the forum ws down I watched "Frontier House" on PBS. Montana in 1883. How would we develop & print with out running water, darkrooms, ect back then? Those early photographers had to realy dedicated! No Internet or roll film back then, let alone a Leica of any type.

-- Tony Oresteen (aoresteen@mindspring.com), May 02, 2002.

To M. K.: you weren´t meant, as far as I know. If so, I would have addressed you directly.
