Lee Friedlander: Real Funny Guy!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Just browse through some of his books in the store.

Must say he is one real nerdy looking, to the point of devilish, funny guy. I cannot stop laughing looking at his self portraits.

He is one real gutsy fellow doing what he did.

Anyone else likes his work?

His best book is " Like a One Eyed Cat". It is a knock out; Although it is hard to find. Paid 125 for my copy. I have seen new copies in original shrink on EBAY FOR 80 RECENTLY: A VERY GOOD BUY!

I have seen a lot of his pictures and I must still see one I like. In my opinion he is one of the most overrated photographers in the world. Terrible pictures.

Speaking of overrated photographers (I like Friedlander's work btw), how about Eggleston? He seems like Joel Sternfeld, but slightly more dirty, y'know? I'm not sure what to make of it. It's so ordinary sometimes.

If Eggleston's pictures are artistic, Alfie is well on his way to becoming a famous photographer too! 8-)

I like both of them. Both visually challenging and inimitable, in my opinion. Friedlander's pictures of his shadow and reflection are eye- openers, I think, just as Eggleston's colour has a unique quality. Not say that either of them get it right all the time. I would prefer either of them to Salgado or most PJ/documentary work.

BTW, the Alfie jokes are wearing a bit thin, don't you think? I can't think of anyone on this forum who has the talent to match either Eggleston or Friedlander, so lets drop slagging off Alfie.

Like his work is an understatement. I really can't think of another photographer who is as consistently great as Lee Friedlander (although Koudelka,Eggleston and Nachtwey are at the top of my list as well.) Given the amount of work he's done, and the seamless manner in which he moves between genres, I am highly suspect of anyone who claims they've never seen a picture of his that they like. His work really deserves more than a cursory glance at the bookstore. My personal favorite Freidlander book is "Factory Vall

It is his style that I do not like. I like a lot of other photographers like Steve McCurry, Sebastiao Salgado, Phil Borges, Ansel Adams, Raghu Rai.

Cartier Bresson is another photographer I regard as overrated. Not as bad as Friedlander, a lot of his pictures are very nice but none of them are very special. His decisive moment has, IMHO, more to do with being at the right place at the right time (for instance at Gandhi just before the assasination) then with pressing the shutter at the right moment.

But of course, different people have different opinions
