I hate it when I leave out a final quote!

Just a point of information: The name 'Camera obscura' is now usually taken to mean a darkened room with a periscope or other lensed optical device fitted into the roof or wall of it; such that the surrounding view(s) can be seen projected on a screen or white table inside the room.
These darkened viewing rooms pre-date photography by some considerable time. The earliest examples date to the beginning of the C18th, and even then, they were nearly always fitted with lenses to give a sharp and bright image.

'Camera obscura' simply means 'dark room' in Latin, and is the origin of our common use of the word 'camera'. It really has nothing to do with pinhole photography.
