Tio Mila misses the Gold Standard

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

According to reports it could be up to a few days before official results are ready from 10-Mila, as a result from a total crash of their results system, meaning the results will have to be re-compiled manually.

Thus does the Gold Standard glide away from 10-Mila for this year. But, if the organizers work hard and have some luck, they might still be able to achieve the USOF Standard.

Halden did take the very, very rare double win though, so congrats to the Norse men and women from Halden (and various other lands as well, it must be acknowledged). In the end IKHP clawed it's way back up to a 9th place, which is pretty darned good considering how woeful things went for them during the night. And even if the women had hoped and aimed for a win, there's still plenty to celebrate over a fine 2nd place. No news about how OK finished, but according to rumors the coach got skunk drunk during the Long Night and tried to get frisky with some of gals from Delta.

For a review of the various Event Reporting Standard Categories, we re-print them here for your convenience (edited from the original form):

"The Gold Standard: some years ago many economists and bankers argued for the backing of all money by fixed amounts of gold. You don't hear as much talk about this in these lower inflation times. But the Gold Standard in results constitutes results in real time, plus commentary and pictures, and also a way for distant followers to interact with the results/announcer folks. The Gold Standard is still pretty elusive.

The Viking Standard: many of the more important O' meets in Scandinavia regularly achieve the Viking Standard, which is comprised of real time results (or close to it) plus hopefully at least a little commentary. This was the standard achieved by Stigtomta Kavlen, as an example.

The Cowboy Standard: Results are posted the same day, as is typified by the RM 1000 Day.

The USOF Standard: Results are posted within a few days, or maybe a week.

The OK/NEOC/SLOC standard: Well, these clubs don't actually do "A" meets anymore, so this is a fairly loose standard.

The Hopelessly Hapless Standard (in some circles aka the "MR" standard): On rare occasion the organizers get things so screwed up they can't even provide same day results *at the meet site*, and any subsequent result reporting is likely to be so heavily flawed it must be viewed with extreme suspicion. Brand new, never field-tested, home written computer code is invariably involved in the most spectacular of these snafus. We will refrain from mentioning any events or clubs by name here, as an act of kindness."

1. Well, it seems like Swampfox has let his pro-svensk feelings affect his judgment. Tio-Mila has already laid claim to his Hopelessly Hapless Standard. No results on its web site at all. No results yet from any source that have any validity -- if they can't tell who ran with which brick, they obviously can't tell who might have mispunched. (Or are they going to use the Billygoat standard of punch checking and just ask everyone if they found them all?)

2. The real-time US-based commentary was pretty impressive, except it seems they went to sleep with 2 legs still to be run. The "We Did It, Oops We Blew It" Standard?

3. Has it occured to Swampfox that the computer problems at Tio-Mila might be connected to JJ's and Kenny's coaching responsibilities for the OK team?

Well I wouldn't have taken the weekend with such a relaxed attitude had I known the caoching staff would have let OK down. Now it's time for finger pointing I guess. P.S. If any former coaches need to make a living off of ripping off mini vans, I would suggest (other than the factory) hanging out at Worlds of Fun.

On a serious note, if you read some of the comments on various bulletin boards over in Sweden, you'll see that the 10-Mila results problems are coming in for some very harsh criticism. And a lot of it.
