12-hour shifts for employees?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Lakes Area Forum : One Thread

Hi Dave,

This one's about that stuff we talked about on the phone today (and may talk about tomorrow which may make this whole thing a non-question, but I thought I'd put it in here for "practice" or example's sake).

The basic question is: Should we set things up so we hire people to work in the campgrounds on the same 12-hour schedule as managers?

The "sub-question" gets into the stuff about the "power shift": 3 managers: one day, one night, one (and a crew) coming on somewhere in the middle to cover the heavier times on Wednesday, Thurs, Fri (and then what?)... It seemed like the idea was that crew would be a 12-hour shift for sure, while the regular day and night people could be on the standard 8-hour rotation...

We'll probably talk about this on the phone tommorow, figure out something basic and workable, I'll talk it over with Sue and Beth tomorrow tonight (Sunday), we'll bring it up in our meeting with Jeff Monday, he'll probably suggest something totally different that may or may not make sense, and next thing we know it'll be July 26th, nobody'll be quite sure what the idea is, a proclamation will come down that will amount to, "Do the same thing we've always done," it'll be September, and the rumor will be the 20th anniversary event was really the last fest, it'll turn out to be true, and that'll be that...

But who knows? We may come up with so many good ideas about how to do things better in camping that we wind up saving them enough money to make up for the 1/4 to 1/2 million $ mistakes being made elsewhere, and one of the main points here is that we could use this forum and the net to do it (punctuated with a few phone calls and expense account trips to DL refine whatever the plans are)...

Or, to put it another way, we use this thing to bullshit back and forth about whatever the "questions" or ideas are... It don't cost nothin' (but some typing time), and who knows? it might help. As you've probably already figured out, all you need to do to add whatever you think to this is click the "Contribute an answer" link at the bottom of this (or any other topic/"thread") to add to the "record" of whatever it is all concerned thinking about camping employees working 12-hour shifts...
