Washington bureaucrat's. and us back home working people

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Week ends on the forum are slow, But been thinking about this. Do you think our Senators, and congressmen really understand what is happening to our country. Go down to the Mexican border, and the citrus farmers are haveing there fence's cut, there cattle running loose. The mexican women come over the border to have there babies, and the babies are then citizens of this country. Go down any big city and see all the plants boarded up, from the jobs we shipped over seas. I understand now that parts for our tanks, and planes are being made in China,[ now isn't that dumb]I think there was very few of us who wanted nafta, The plants in Mexico are poluting lakes and rivers. Did you know that 40 thousands birds died on migration last year, just from drinking the water. Also this oil and gas, Should we have drilling in Alaska, I think it would be better than being under the thumb of the arabs. I saw on TV where the bears like to walk the pipe line in Alaska, because it is easier to get around. And the caribo get under the pipe line for the shade. Don't they realize in Washington, that a Service industry , which is what we are now, In time, with the money going oversea's will self destruct. We have very few factories left. Both parents in most family's have to work, to just keep there head above water. While they sit up there on capital hill and line there pockets. Then we got the NEA, National Education Associaton. It's a huge boon doggle, And the schools are not teaching our kids any better. In fact we are way down on the world list. How about our infastructure, our bridges, our highways, our national parks, I understand the sewer systems in big eastern citys are rotting away. And yet we send millions of dollars over seas to country's who hate us. WHY?

I think this country should be run by true statesman not politicians, but I know that will never happen. I agree with everything you said, Irene. And I might add last week the big beef packers killed the cattle market because of the possible passing of a bill that would have prohibited them from owning cattle, (I believe the last 30 days before market) and controlling the market. The few big packing companies shut down for a day on purpose to kill the market. They want to make the small cattle feeder go out of business so they can control everything.

I think it all boils down to GREED and POWER. Oh well, this world is not my home, I'm just passing through, but we as indivduals can make a difference, if only in a small way. Blessings on Everyone's Weekend.

It is funny you brought this up Irene, as we just watched a movie called Animal Farm which was based on George Orwell's book, and it used real animals to portray the parts. It was funny in places but very sad in others. Showed how little by little the "common man's" rights are slowly chipped away at. I asked my kids if they thought that people like Washington and Jefferson would even recognize this as the same country any longer. They would probably prefer England then to America now!!!!

Irene I agree with you 100 percent-----& I agree with Marilyn-----we have to do the best we can in our own little part of the world!!!!

I may not be able to change the world but I can have a voice in what is going on where I am & do all I can!!!! Do as much as I can to help the rural area where I live & try to keep it from dyeing!!!!!

Also keep up with the knowledge as to be informed about what is going on & not stick my head in the sand---

And I let my voice be heard local & state & national with my representives----it may not make a difference--but at least I say something to them--instead of not doing anything---for what ever it is worth---

And we pray for our local/state & national representives & president daily!!!!!

How sad that the young folks cannot see this happening to their country. Neil and I watched our local news in horror last week as they announced with glee yet another foreign automaker plant in Alabama....we now have Honda and Mercedes, and hmm, oh, I forget the name, but it is another Japanese manufacturer..nobody seems to notice that our own companies are going out of business...worse still, they interviewed a local school teacher about the new plant and here is what she had to say. " I am so happy for my students. As a school teacher, I can feel better, knowing that the children will have jobs when they graduate." Good grief! when I went to school, teachers were the ones encouraging us to aspire to lofty goals in life..if you wanted to work all your life on an assembly line, then that was fine, but teachers sure didn't encourage that as a GOAL! Seems as if you cannot buy anything anymore which is not made elsewhere, and folks still do not "get it" ..where do they think this money is going? Neil and I are happy that we will be dead and buried when the results of this ignorance finally hits home..we have educated our children to become as self-sufficient as possible..I sure hope they have listened because the world is not going to be a nice place at all...

Irene, I'm pretty sure your about to get your "pipedream". In my younger years I constructed pipelines. I received a call from Buck Moore on Thursday asking me if I was interested in coming back to construct a major one. Alaska to Washington State. I am considering it !

I have been gone for a few days. Much needed R &R in NC. to vist relatives. As we traveled through WV and VA to NC. I saw old farmsteads falling down. What will happen to our country when AGri. is all the big factory farms. They cause a lot more environmetal problems than a well constructed pipeline. But here in NE Oh I pass many wells that are not pumping. Only once in While. Why? I am sure there must still be oil and gas down there. My husband says that some day this country will go hungry. We wont see it but future generations might. This country use to be a strong export country and now look at the imports. I look at lables and try not to buy from overseas but it is getting more difficult all the time. I sometimes wonder if the voice of the everyday people are ever heard. I guess we just keep doing the best we can . Billie

Lesley, even those foreign auto plants generate work for Americans, and if American cars weren't so unreliable (unless people think Consumer Reports is biased), more people would buy them instead of Honda and Toyota. A lot of people also still hold the outdated notion that anything coming from Japan is inferior--not true. Almost all of the electronic items we buy today (computers, TVs, music equipment, etc.) come from Japan, not here.

The reason people work on assembly lines is that because of unions, they make lots of money for pulling one switch, or pressing one button all day, in many cases making more than teachers, military personnel, etc. No wonder companies relocate elsewhere--they can't afford professional wages for in many cases unskilled labor.

I don't want to see drilling in Alaska, I think people should be allowed to modify their cars (take off bumpers, windshields, roofs, windows, etc.--replace with a roll bar and wear a helmet) to be more fuel efficient. You can drive a motorcycle with no personal protection, but not a modified car. Go figure. Jack up gas prices, maybe people will get smart and live near their work instead of commuting 2 hours each way. We waste so much of our resources in this country, and it is sad.
