puppy hates brushing!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Poodle Support Group : One Thread

hi, i am new to this forum, so be patient! i have a 12 week old black male standard (a family dog), and am slowing trying to get him used to grooming ( for now, just brief brushing and light ear cleaning). he seems to get frantically mouthy when i attempt any of this, (and sometimes tries to leap straight up in the air) so i do a little and back off. is he too young? it almost seems that he is a bit thin-skinned ( i know i am entering horse territory now). i am using a pin brush for his coat and wipes for the ears. any thoughts? thanks

Hi Leslee...

I don't think you're doing anything wrong and no, your pup is not too young for his daily groomings at home. I have a litter of 6 week old babies that have been brushed and had their faces shaved since 3 weeks. They are so accustomed to being handled now and they have no trouble with the forced air dryer. Could be your puppy's breeder didn't prepare him for this at an early age.....or could be as simple as he's being a naught litle boy who's trying to see what he can get away with !! LOL Don't give up....if he begins to "mouth" you just tell him no in a firm voice and start to brush again......when he behaves then use a friendly, upbeat voice to praise him for good behavior. I really believe that voice control is the key to training. Good luck with your new puppy!!!

Oh, btw.....you might try and use a gentle slicker brush instead of the pin brush. It will be softer for him until he's used to being brushed regularly.
