Who is Ulalume? I don't need to know for an essay or something, I just admire Poe. That is, I don't need an "official" answer, but any opinions are welcome!! Thank you, Helen

The origins of this poem are complex but the emotions of Poe at this time soon after Virginia's death are at least present in this audibly evocative verse. The story may not exactly have been meant to refer completely or allegorically to Virginia but undeniably the feeling is there. Thomas Mabbot's book on Poe's poetry gives a lot of background leading up to this poem, Annabel Lee and The Bells, as poems urged on Poe by friends seeking verses of musical effect.
