Jardel

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Rumours are saying that Robson is very interested in buying Jardel. It is also said that the player himself would love a move to England. Personally i think Jardel is top class and his statistics speaks for it self, pretty impressive. Anyone agree/disagree?

Aye, top player, if he's available it's the sort of signing we should be looking for.

Proposed price tag - £10m! He better be bloody good. Have me doubts about this one.

Maybe we should go for Robbie Keane instead?

either would do, this is the level of player we should be being connected with, although I believe we could get Laslande for next to nothing, if we really pushed out the boat

classy player!

LOL Macbeth!!

So far this season he's scored 37 goals for Sporting Lisbon. The next best scorer in the league has scored 16.

Jardel is a good striker no doubt. But do we need another one? If, say, Jardel signed for us, we would have no less tha six (J + AS, CB, CC, LLL, SA) forwards, with a number waiting in the wings. That would imply that one or two of them would probably leave elsewhere (which, for some, might be an idea even without Jardel).

If we get Jardel then I bet CC is on his way. I think that CC was bought in case AS never properly recovered. Since then Bellamy has been bought and enabled us to play in a way that I suspect Mr. Robson did not expect to achieve as quickly. The revelation over the last few weeks is that CC just does not fit in to this type of football - and probably never will. Mr. Robson talks kindly about CC having to get his confidence back - but I guess there is more to CC's ability not to be able to adapt.

I think Cort is still a Shearer back up, and I hope that's all he was bought for.

If BR has some masterplan of playing AS and CC together then it would be a tad worrying.

I still think Cort has something to offer. Wasn't his goal ration last season something like 1 every other game when he finally did play? (Softie...stats?) It is clear this season that he and Shearer cannot play together, but he is closer to a Shearer type anyway. He's also been out injured for most of 2 seasons, so his form is bound to suffer. Give the lad a full preseason training and a chance to play alongside players like Bellamy and Lx3 before writing him off.

A 'taxi driver' told me that the Makems are interested in Cort & Harper. Same source said we are close to signing Stam on a free at £60,000 per week. Also after Bridge for Southampton. Don't definately believe any of them, but I report what I hear here.

I wouldn't be surprised if Harper leaves. He should be reaching the peak of his career and is too good to be a permanent back-up. BUT....he's not allowed to go to the Mackems. Or Manure. Or Spurs. Or Chelsea. Or Arsenal. Or any other team I don't like. ;-))

I'm concerned about how much we would get for Harper. He has not been in the shop window for a long time. He is a brilliant keeper and it's so unlucky for him that he is at the club with the Premier's best keeper, and that Shay has stayed fit for so long. I would hope that £3m would be an absolute minimum although he may not have enough form to justify this. Actually, if he does get a Premier place somewhere, I think he will prove his value to be nearer £5m-£7m.

In an ideal world we keep him - thus retaining the 2 best stoppers in the Premier, but Harper must be keen to build a career for himself as he is top class in his own right and we mustn't hold it against him if he does, regretably, choose to go.

I don`t think Harper`s that good, at least from what I`ve seen of him. He`s a competent back-up but he`s not in the same class as Shay. There`s no way we`d get 3 million for him but if we were offered that much I`d be tempted to take it especially if he was keen to go. I`d have every sympathy with him if he wanted to leave and you`re dead right about him probably wanting to build a career. Mind you, I had my doubts about Given for a long time but he`s certainly proved me wrong this season.

ESPN.com:

"Sporting miss another title chance

LISBON, April 27 (Reuters) - Sporting missed a chance to land their 18th Portuguese league title on Saturday after being held to a 2-2 away draw by lowly Vitoria de Setubal. Two goals from Brazilian striker Mario Jardel brought the Lisbon side to within a point of the title, which they could have secured with victory. ... Sporting took the lead in the 32nd minute when an unmarked Jardel's header bounced off the ground and over Vitoria goalkeeper Candido. ... Sporting turned up the pressure after the break and forced Vitoria to concede a couple of early corners, from one of which Jardel sneaked in to equalise for Sporting.

It was Jardel's 40th goal of the season, which makes him the Portuguese league's top scorer by a distance and certain to end his fifth season as the domestic league's leading marksman."

Sign this lad now.

Steve Harper's an excellent keeper who is now wasting his career festering in the background at SJP. For the sake of his career, he should leave now.

Unfortunately, I doubt we'd get much more than £1m for him, and being selfish would be delighted if he stayed - it would cost us more than £1m to adequately replace him, and Pavel Srnicek would certainly not be an adequate No2 to Given.

It depends on what Given does. If he bu99ers of to Glasgae, then Stevie Harper would be a great replacement. If Given commits his future to SJP, then I'd reluctantly let Steve go. I can honestly see him ending up at the SoS as a replacement for Sorensen.
