Will a Vivitar 19mm wide angle lens work on my Canon Rebel 2000?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have a Canon Rebel 2000 with a few lenses. I looked at a Vivitar 19mm wide angle lense and was wondering if it would fit on my Rebel 2000? How can I tell? Is there a website that would tell me? Any advice? Thanks!

If the Vivitar is designed for Canon EF (modern autofocus line) it will fit on any Canon EOS camera. Third-parties like Vivitar make lenses to fit all the major cameras (Canon, Nikon, etc.). It should be clear that the lens is made FOR Canon.

There are often problems with compatibility of electronics (metering, focusing)--you'll just have to test it, but if the lens is made for Canon EF it will FIT.

absolutely true...

as pointed out by preston, if the lens is made for Canon EOS cameras it will surely fit. But no guarantee of working. I mean the compactibility problem.

No it will not work. The vivitar 19mm is in manual mount only, this means Canon FD. only Ef mount will work on your Rebel.

Vivitar does sell a 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom lens that can come with an EOS mount & does work with the Rebel 2000. As far as I can tell, there has never been a compatibility problem with this lens. It's also sold as a Phoenix and Cosina. It's a low quality zoom with so- so optics, but is remarkable for it's low price. Although for another $20 you can get the Tokina 19-35 & it's reported to be a bit better. For wide angle optics on a budget, they're a good deal.

The actual answer to your question is yes, provided you can find the Pentax screw mount version of the lens and you use a Pentax Screw mount to EOS adaptor. I know because I've done this (on an Elan, not a Rebel 2000). The lens is decent, a bit soft in the corners but that's no shock with a cheap wideangle lens.
