WHAT a turnaround!

I'm compelled to actually try and write a tribute!

(i apologise for the bad England)

The Watershed arrived in the most spectacular way. Heaven opened and unleashed a bursting, magnificent torrent on the stage that was St James Park. Gullit and Shearer the main players, Reid and Philips thickening the twisting plot. Betrayal, hatred, despair. Spite, anger, pain. This was Newcastle versus Sunderland. This was Newcastle versus self destruction. The stage was set.

This time in the paddy field there was no Sellars or even O'Brien. No sunshine football in the heavy rain, Newcastle fans were singing - but there was no glorious feeling. Not even Kevin Ball trying to lob his own keeper from 40 yards could liftthe gloom. This was dark, this was depressing, this was the watershed.

Newcastle fans didn't appreciate the momentus occasion. A dramatic culture change was unfolding, thousands of lives were literally being transformed. God had opened his doors and had unleashed enlightenment onto the fans of Sunderland AFC. The smiling faces of Reids red and white army were ecstatic. They were nearly clean. Showered, almost cleansed. A new dawn for Sunderland.

But the twilight had already turned to pitch darkness for Gullit. Newcastle were defeated and Sunderland had won on a field soaked like a sponge at wet and wild. Out battled, and with only 1 point out of a possible 21 Newcastle were drowning, and fast. Assasinations of character, battles of wit and the hurt of defeat, this was the end for Gullit. It also looked like the end for Newcastle in the Premiership. Hopes washed away in a cruel, gut wrenching watershed. But strangely Shearer remained dry, hidden inside the dugout, golden balls indeed.

Newcastle fans were down, spirits were low, tension was high. Something had to give, and it did. Gullit gave his resignantion to Freddie Shepherd and history was calling Newcastle forward.

Gullit departed stage left, whilst those left behind in the dugout celebrated Newcastles first victory of the season. The lonely figure of Gullit packed his bag and left for Amsterdam, never to return. A dream had died, the watershed had shed its load. Gullit was gone.

Newcastle needed a miracle, a saint, a knight in shining armour. It didn't get one. It got something better, it got Bobby Robson. This was the momentus, turning moment.

The months since the glorious day of arrival have just got better and better. Confucios once said that where there are dark shadows there are the brightest lights. Too damn right.

History has showed that until now he hasn't won any leagues, any tophies, nothing, not a pot. But Newcastle got something, self respect, Champions League Football and hope.

The man is unique. May god bless him.
