How to prevent rangefinder flare in low light situations?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I took part in a black and white workshop yesterday in which we shot part of the time in a dimly let room with long exposure times. I got very frustrated trying to focus my M6TTL.58 body. Most of the time I could not even see the rangefinder patch. How best to cope with this? I thought that the M6 was supposed to be a great low light camera? I have seen the ad for Lutz's "shade". Will this help in low light? He states it is designed for backlit situations.

thanks!

I've used one M6 for twelve years and another for six, plus 2 more M6's that came and went (my "chrome period"), done a lot of shooting in dimly-lit clubs with spotlights, outdoors at night with streetlamps and floods, just about every kind of lighting you can imagine, and the only time I've ever had a problem focusing them (aside from with moving subjects which for me is hopeless)is if my eye wasn't centered behind the eyepiece. If you get that again try moving your head just a fraction of a mm one way or the other.

Most of the time if you centre your eye carefully the flare disappears; if not, just cover the illumination window with your finger.

Luts's shade for the M6. I have these on both cameras. They stay on full-time and I feel they work as advertised.
