Auto focus

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I guess this sounds kind of stupid.. but I just bought a canon rebel 2000 with a 20-80 mm lens.. My question is when using auto focus does the whole lens focus (as in zooming) or just the end.. I mean do I need to zoom in on my own or should the whole lens turn.?

Focus and Zoom are totally different functions. Focusing lets you get the sharpest possible image, zooming allows you to frame a closer view of the target image. When you are using Auto Focus you will need to zoom in and out manually if you need to.

and don't worry kelley that you are asking a stupid question. there are many who doesn't know anything about photography and buy a (SLR) camera and learn a lot through books and net. so no question is stupid.

Zooming on these cameras is not like zooming on a point and shoot-- which zooms at the touch of a button.

When you use autofocus, only the end of the lens will move.

When you use autofocus, only the end of the lens will move.

on a non-ring USM lens.

But focussing is done with a touch button - the shutter button or * button just like a point and shoot zoom. Press the button until you get the sharpest possible images in the viewfinder.
