Metz+SC17+M6TTL=TTL?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Archives answered some questions but I have few others some may have tried.

1. The Nikon SB-24/25s kill M6 TTL batteries very quickly and the TTL function does not work correct?

2. The Nikon SC17 TTL cords seem to work with the Leica 20 flash and provide TTL control right? Another cord, Contax? also works?

3. Here is the question. Has anyone ever tried the Metz 54 MZ3 off camera with a Nikon SC17 cord? Does it work? TTL function works? Metz flash and SC17 contacts compatable?

I like the 54 flash and so I'm curious about the off camera TTL possibilty. I think Metz also has a TTL cord of their own but I have 2 SC17s already.

Thanks

Yes the SC-17TTL cord works well with the Leica TTL cameras and compatabile flashes.

Absolutely. I use a 54MZ3 with SC17 cord on (well, actually *off*) my R8. I also have several other Metz flashes on which I place Nikon modules and mount them on either Nikon's SU-4 wireless TTL slave trigger, or ones made by Ikelite. They copy the output of the flash connected to the R8 (an SF20 works great for this)and together give a wireless multiple flash setup with TTL exposure control. Any of the slaves can be dialed-down or up with the control on the module.

I wonder why Leica does not have their own cord (or someone else's, rebadged). Does Leica recommend using the SC17 with their own or some other flash?

The Metz TTL off-camera solution for SCA 3000, which is rather unwieldy, is to leave the SCA adapter in the camera's hot shoe and to connect a cord plus a separate adapter between the SCA adapter and the flashgun. This information is not clearly stated at the Metz web site and I had to send an email technical inquiry to get the information from Metz. The Metz TTL cords are different for SCA 300 and SCA 3000.

The Nikon SC-17 solution is simpler and more sensible, IMHO. It consists of a cord that plugs into the camera's hot shoe at one end and the SCA adapter at the other. It works equally well for SCA 300 and SCA 3000. The SC-17 can be used with Leica M6TTL and compatible Metz adapter + flashgun, e.g. the Metz SCA 3502 adapter and 54 MZ3 flash. It is also suitable foe R series cameras.
