2012?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

It seems like the next big date for world end is 2012. According to the Maya's predictions the world will stop existing in 2012. that gives us 10 years. After that it's the Jewish that have us ending in 2247 (I think the date is correct)and while it would be nice to be around then, I will be 295 yrs old,I just don't think I'll worry about that date. Do you believe 2012 is the one or not? We have been through just about all the world ending doom and gloom by now haven't we, and we're still here. Even the apostles over 2 thousand yrs ago thought the end was at hand then and they figured wrong about that.

We're like that blasted energize rabbit,we keep on going and going and going -----------. All I'm looking and hoping for is one big depression to straighten the folks out a bit and have them come to their senses.

lol on the energize rabbit bit, no, I don't believe the Maya thing, only God knows when the world will end and He's not tellin'. Do you really think a depression would straighten out the world, or are people too far gone to let it? Seems life was a lot different before the last depression, but maybe it just 'seems' that way. Too many country folk aren't country any more, they might panic with the rest of them.

I believe I will continue to live each day as if it is my last. I thought the world was coming to an end when rap music debuted :>)

2247!?......guess I better order some more MRE's

May be some ammo to shoot some holes in the Ozone thingy

Would a real depression help???

I think a major depression would at least, (to use a old saying), "seperate the men from the boys". I would hope that the material excess would at least be halted, and maybe we could regroup then and start again with more common sense to living.

If I remember right the Mayan thing isn't really a prediction - it's just that their calender stopped there. I think they just got tired & quit. Stop watching the news on TV, don't read supermarket tabloids & you'll feel lots better!

When I went and visited the Maya spots, way back when, I learned that the Maya had a more accurate calendar than the Gregorian one (the one we use, I think). It resembled three wheels, or gears. one turned the second, which turned the third.

One theory as to why the Maya culture kind of dissolved, back in the early part of the second millineum, was that there calendar ran out. That was like 700-800 years ago, though. Don't know how it would affect 2012. Did it run out AGAIN?

I love the Maya descendants. Fine people. Fine FINE people. Too bad our friendly neighborhood government saw fit to overthrow their democratically elected government back in 1953 or 1954, and put the Maya into slavery, all for the almighty buck, aka United Fruit Company.

The above refers to the Maya descendants in Guatemala. Not sure of the Maya descendants' history in Mexico, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador; I suspect that it's similarly sad...

You've forgotten to mention the alleged coming ice age, not to mention Planet X!!! I'll worry about that tomorrow, Scarlet. Right now the garden needs planting desparately, old clunky the car is slinging oil everywhere, when it'll run at all, something is catching my chickens again, the water coming into the house is leaking like a sieve and once it gets into the house, it won't run back out the drain like it's supposed to. The fleas are reproducing like crazy. Too bad there's not a market for them. Ditto with the mosquitoes. An ice age might take care of those two. There's always plenty of things to go wrong and people have been watching for the "end times" before there was a Christian era. Relax Friend and worry about and with something you might actually be able to do something about!

I wonder: would an ice age get rid of the lady bugs?

-- Cindy (S.E.IN) (atilrthehony_1@yahoo.com), April 19, 2002.

Cindy, I don't even think NUKING them would help get rid of them. They're everywhere.

As for worrying about whether 2012 will happen or not,I in truth could care less, but I also know that that date could become a gold mine like Y2K did for some people. You know as we come closer to 2012,that the hypers out there will be reading everything into it and people will be stocking up again, etc. So a smart person just might be able to make a few bucks by accommodating them poor city folks by selling them 2012 supplies.

"According to the Maya's predictions the world will stop existing in 2012."

Not exactly (now for those not familiar, I am talking astronomy not astrology though many terms are the same). We come to the end of the Mayan Fifth Age on that date.

According to their beliefs, at the end of the First Age, everyone was eaten by giant jaguars. At the end of the Second Age, there was destruction by air. The end of the Third Age, fire burned everyone. The Fourth Age ended in a great flood that drown everyone. The Fifth age is supposed to end when we enter into a new precessional calander (Remember the "dawning of the age of aquarius"?) and earthquakes will do us all in.

Its important to note that according to their beliefs, there are various Adam & Eve types (Noah-ish?)that are spared or somehow escape the devastation and populate the new age.

The Mayan 5 ages, over 25,000 of our years, when added up take us back to the last time we precessionally entered Aquarius or that is to say how long its been since the pole of our planet pointed to the same point in space. So the end of this age is the end of a much larger cycle, the "end of the end".

The calander has to end not necessarily because all man kind or the planet or anything else will be entirely destroyed but because it is the beginning of something that according to them will be entirely new. Whatever they said the new thing would be, maybe according to their dogma we all become energy ghosts or something, will not likely ever be known because the teachings were destroyed by conquistador and church and there is nothing left to suggest that even they "knew" what would come next.
