His wife, Virginia Clemm who was also his cousin, was in the next room dying of Tuberculosis. He affectionately called Virginia, Sissy, from before they were married. The horrible part about him losing her to TB was that he lost his real mother, Eliza to the same disease as well as a brother and his foster mother, Frances Allan. He used his exposure to this blood coughing disease in his title, "The Masque of the Red Death."
