Over Achievers?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I pulled the following off the Chelsea unofficial site. What do we think? Has Mr. Sour Grapes got a point, or do you really get what you deserve over a full season, notwithstanding it ain't finished yet? Mr SG writes, 'Bloody hell lads, I was doing cartwheels at work when the 2-0 scoreline came across on my mobile , i spent over a tenner then checking the score every two minutes and how my heart sank when those goals went in. Yet again newcastle over-achieve we now need a miracle to claim that 4th spot and with Dirty useless Leeds winning {only just} they close the gap on us. Lets be honest I'd rather newcastle claimed 4th than Leeds if it came down to that. We now must win all our matches and hope Newcaslte loose their two away games ie. Blackburn and Southampton , ie both possible in some sense but i feel there will be a few more twists in the tale before that. Charlton and West Ham could do us a favour at St. James but it just goes to show how poor newcaslte are the way they played prior to Robert's free-kcik yet the media's darlings will be plauded as if they're the best thing to happen the EPL. Anyway I'll stop as sour grapes are starting to set in but really our beloved blues should be there.'

A Point, or A Pain in the arse?

I wonder how Mr Grapes reacted when Man U impressively turned over Spurs earlier in the season in similar fashion. Besides, isn't winning while playing badly a sign of a great side? ;-)

Neither of you will be suprised to hear that I'm still predicting 6th spot for us....our form over the last 9 games has been shocking, we were lucky on saturday and I can't see us beating Wham, Blackburn or Soton....

Bah Humbug...

bugger off gav, we'll win them all man!

-- Anonymous, April 15, 2002

Welcome back Gav. I've missed the moaning (but not much). Pity your week away didn't put you in a better frame of mind. BTW, I'm thinking of going up for the Charlton game with Min, up Saturdat early, back Sunday early (that's if Min's okay with that). Fancy a trip?

Would love to mate but i'm back in Zurich then.... :(

Gav, we weren't lucky on Saturday believe me. Asleep for 70 minutes yes, but our performance in the last 20 was worthy of winning any game. From what I can remember Derby had about 3 shots on target the entire game, we had atleast 9, 3 of which hit the woodwork (does that count as 'on target'?) and 3 of which went in. Ok so a couple of them might have been offside, but we also had a nailed-on Penalty turned down. Our biggest stroke of luck was going 2-0 down, it finally convinced YBR to replace CC with something a bit faster, more skillful and easier on the eye.

Dave, if I didn't know better I'd think YBR had brought on Kylie. Saw the game in the Wig and Gown, near your place. Good pub for illegal satellite footy broadcasts (Dutch satellite for Derby game), full of London Mags. View only partially spoilt by two dickheads who stood playing the fruitie for two hours. Still, not as good as being there.

It's all about confidence and belief. After that dreadful run in March, the team just didn't look like they felt they could win. Lets hope the Derby comeback has given them that belief back.

As for that Chelsea supporter - what is it with 'overachieve'? What the hell does that mean in this context? You can only beat who is put in front of you. As for 'as usual Newcastle over achieve' - what is he talking about? Falming cheek - I hope Arsenal stuff them in the FA cup.

They probably won't be that bothered Lynda, cos, as far as I understand it, they'll be in the EUFA Cup regardless, provided Arse qualify for the champs league via league position.

It would probably mean more to them to pip us to a Champs League spot than any fleeting satisfaction they might get from the Cup Final, even against the arse.

Isn't overachieve the word Bob Murray used to describe S/lands two 7th place finishes? ;)

-- Anonymous, April 16, 2002

definitely a point to be considered. Think that the past two seasons we've really been shite, while I will agree last season was an aberration because of injuries, but to all of a sudden show up as title contenders for most of the season, and finish with a shot at CL, I would definitely agree with Mr. SG.

It's now imperative that we win everything next season, just to show we really deserve to be where we are and this season was just a prelude for things to come!

we have a young side, they should improve with age, like a good whine.

we do spend money in the transfer market whereas the over achievers like Ipswich and Sunderland don't, if the money is well spent, not wasted like on Bellamy, then we shoudl improve.

the issue we have is one or two positions need the best player to be better, and we need a bit more strength in depth generally, addressing that should stop is dropping daft points, while still allowing us to win daft points

I don't buy the term over achievers. It isn't possible to achieve more than you're capable of.

This season we have been capable of this and more, in a lot of games you'd say we COULD and SHOULD have played a lot better.

You can under-achieve however, and Chelsea do this every season. If everyone achieved what their potential allowed then perhaps they would finish above us (and may still do).

I honestly don't care about Chelsea's fans, they love themselves so much and remember they wanted Ranieri out after only 3 months in the job. Now that's called giving someone a chance.

I firmly believe in the over achiever line of thinking, just look at the team that almost won the premiership. it included the likes of Watson, clark, howey, barton, beresford, peacock. Now if anyone tells me that these players playing in any other side apart from our one would've been anywhere near as good as they were that season, you need to stop smoking smokin' spliffs.

They were magnificent that year, none of them has repeated anything like that form since.

But if they achieved it, they must have been capable of it. Maybe the attacking style of play papered over the defensive cracks, but it was still that particular group of players that achieved the feat.

If they did it, then that would surely imply they are capable of it. Maybe you can over achieve compared with what is expected of you, but you can't do better than you actually are.

I want to see consistent top 4 finishes before i'll be happy....

-- Anonymous, April 16, 2002

In that case we are all capable of something remarkable, one day Gav might even be an optimist............or is that stretching it. ;-) It's a matter of application.

-- Anonymous, April 16, 2002

That is indeed stretching it ;))

-- Anonymous, April 16, 2002

Yeah syme, some of us are capable of remarkable things.

A lot of us can't consistently achieve them, but it's still not over- achieving, which suggests that you do something which is beyond your capabilities, which is a contradiction. On one hand you do something, and on the other you aren't capable of doing it.

Have you been smoking dodgy baccy paul? or just looking for one of those conversations :))

-- Anonymous, April 16, 2002

I agree that some of us are capable of unremarkable things..

I don't think that over-achieving is suggesting that we can do things that we are not capable of, that of course would create a paradoxical situation. What it does suggest is that the standard, expected level or the level of expected achievment has been surpassed.

For example WBA got to the 1/4 finals of the FA Cup, I think that can be seen as a remarkable achievment, they raised their game to a unfamiliar level or they over achieved to attain those results.

-- Anonymous, April 16, 2002

if you can under-achieve, logic follows that you must be able to over- achieve..

Cannit argue with science, man!

-- Anonymous, April 16, 2002

Right i've done enough surfing for porn for one night....i'm off....

Err i'll check back on this conversation in the morning and see how you got on.........maybe ;))

dictionary.com definition:

"To perform better or achieve more success than expected"

I disagree with that :)
