It would seem oobvious except that Poe tried attributing his late poems sometimes to other women, after Virginia's death. Also this is one project that took on a public life of its own and inspired by an older poem "The Mourner"(By DMC 1807) to which it is very similar in meter and subject. In the end I think, subconsciously at the very least, there are telling details and emootions that connect the poem to Poe and Virginia and a stage in his mourning which he very likely never moved beyond before his death. Though he tried.

It always surprises me when someone asks "Who was Annabel Lee"? If one has enough knowledge of Poe's work, it should be obvious, should it not? Poe's young wife died in 1847,the poem, Poe's last, was written in 1849, a few months before Poe's untimely death in the same year. Poe was totally obsessed with his wife Virginia and her death took Poe's poetic skills to an entirely different level, one of mournful and never ending rememberence of a woman that Poe put above all the angels in Heaven. I think that we all look for this degree of love in our lives, but it is subscribed to very few in this world
