Concentrated Homemade Laundry Soap

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I started making the homemade laundry soap that I found here and/or on Countryside not long ago. I didn't want to have to have such a big container for a batch (I really wanted to make 2-4 batches at a time) so I worked on reducing the water in the batch. Now I just use approximately 12 cups of water for a quadruple (4x) batch and put less in the washer when the time comes.

I make it just like the recipe but as it is cooling I stir up the solids that rise to the top and as it gets almost cool I get out my electric mixer and break up those solids completely. I have found that if I put it in an open container (a square bucket with a lid) I can quickly stir it up with my measuring scoop and measure out 1/4 cup or less for my wash load.

Dena- would you mind posting your whole recipe? I've been searching for one to no avail, and yours sounds like "just the ticket"! Toni

Sure,

For 1 batch:

1/4 bar Fels Naphtha Soap 4-6 cups water 1/2 cup Borax 1/2 cup WASHING Soda

Melt the soap with the water in a stainless steel pan. Stir in the Borax & WASHING Soda. As it cools, stir often and use a mixer to break up the solids as it is nearly cooled. (If multiplying the quantity, the directions are the same--except you may want to start with just the 4-6 cups water and then stir in the the rest of the water when you add the WASHING Soda and Borax.)

Take NOTE: The washing soda is from Arm & Hammer and I find it at the Kroger--it is NOT baking soda.
