Pubs during the World Cup can open early!
And you can be pissed by 7.30
'Cos the judge said we could, apparently

"LONDON (Reuters) - A pub owner has won a court battle to serve early-morning pints of beer to soccer fans as they watch the World Cup finals on television in May and June.
Gough [publican] had appealed against a decision by local magistrates who indicated they were willing to allow him to open but said previous High Court rulings prevented them from doing so.
But Lord Chief Justice Lord Woolf told the court that clients watching soccer on television in a pub were participating in a special event, meaning that the premises should be allowed to open at unusual hours.
" In my judgment the way competitions of this sort are watched by those attending pubs to do so at the present time is quite different from the way it was at the time of the earlier decisions," he said.
"If one were to ask anyone today whether the World Cup was a national special event I apprehend that the reaction would be immediate, that it was."

Is this based on personal experience, I wonder? I can just imagine LCJ Woolf down the pub sampling the atmospehere ;-)

He's actually alright as a person (clunk of a name drop). I grew up not far from his house, albeit his was the huge f@cking mansion opposite Barnes Common and we were in a semi down the road. He let us and few other kids use their pool every now and then in the summer. Bit sad really, because his sons were comeplete twats and he probably thought it would make them popular.
