Much overlooked by historians, Alexander's greatest contribution to the ancient world was emptying the treasury of the Persian Empire - he spent and gave away literally tonnes of gold that had been sitting around gathering dust doing nobody any good. By way of contrast, two years after Alexander conquered Persia, gold was so plentiful that people took to throwing it into the ocean to see if it would float.
