The department blamed a technical problem in the Human Resources Department for the delay on Monday and has committed itself to paying the teachers before the end of this month.

Teachers unpaid for four months
A Phoenix teacher, who asked not to be named, and who was promoted to a management position in April last year, told the Daily News that he has not received his increment and has not been issued with a letter of appointment.

This delay has angered the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu), which has called for a complete "overhaul of the department's administration".

Sadtu spokesperson Ndaba Gcwabaza said: "People have paid much attention to the level one educators who have not been paid, but we also want to point out that teachers promoted to Head of Department positions last year have also not received their salaries".

It also emerged that the Adult Basic Education Training (ABET) programme was on the verge of collapse following the failure of the department to pay teachers for four months.

Gcwabaza confirmed this on Monday, adding that teachers who were in charge of ABET centres during the October/ November examinations last year had not received their salaries.

Education spokesperson Mandla Msibi said the error had occurred in the human resources department, where details of the promoted and new teachers were not on the computer system.

"We have sent out our officials from all our regions to correct that problem and teachers will be paid as soon as possible," Msibi said.
