NC - Hundreds of living bank customers declared dead

Asheville, North Carolina-AP -- Hundreds of residents of western North Carolina have been declared dead because of an apparent banking error, and it's keeping them from receiving their Social Security benefits.

After C-C-B bought most of western North Carolina's First Union branches, a computer glitch apparently had some people declared dead.

C-C-B officials say in the merger, some of First Union's accounts mistakenly transferred over as deceased customers. That means when the Treasury Department tried to electronically transfer their Social Security checks, the banks sent them back.

People are having to get by without their money for the next ten days while the Social Security Administration tries to correct the mistake.
