tamron 28-105 f2.8 vs ef 28-70 f2.8

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

A salesman showed me this Tamron lens and suggested it instead of the canon 28-70L..it's $400 is fixed 2.8 and goes to 105 ..is much less and looks pretty decent...Does anyone know much about it and can offer any opinions? I recent sold my 28mm 2.8, 28-105mm, and 100mm to buy the 28-70L .. I have a 50mm MK I and the 70-200mm4L....i shoot mostly people and enjoy snap shots of family and friends along with some more serious portrait work...

I have the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and couldīnt be happier. Autofocus is a bit slow but otherwise itīs a great lens!

While I don't consider Photodo the "holy Grail" of lens testing, the Tamron scored a 2.4 while the Canon scored a 3.9.

To be perfectly honest....

There's a reason that the Canon costs 2-3 times as much money (or more). If it was possible to make a decent 28-xxx F2.8 for $600, don't you think Canon would? Come on, they sell the 70-200 F4L for $600 because they can, and people love it.

Don't spoil the party by taking a short-cut. You've sold a lot of gear for the Canon...stick with that choice.

As pointed out by Isaac You've sold a lot of gear for the Canon... Why do you need that extra 70-105mm. Its already covered by your 70-200 L f4. Just for f2.8. I guess not. Otherwise you would be a fool to sell a 100mm (if its Canon) just to get the same focal length from a zoom lens. Just stick to Canon.

Happy shooting

When pop photo tested the 28-105 f2.8 tamron, they found it to be good when stopped down to 5.6 across the range, however, in close focusing it was said to be a bit soft, and had high field curvature. Fortunatly Tamron has not had the same compaibility as Sigma, so you may not run the same risk of be stuck with a paperweight down the road, but if you have the ability to rent or borrow a canon 28-105 you may find it to be sharper than the tamron. OH one other thing, at close focus the tamrons max focal lenght turns to 83mm due to internal focusing.
