Summilux-M 1.4/35 weight

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I am considering the purchase of a non-Aspheric Summilux-M 1.4/35 lens for my M6. I would like to know the weight and of this lens in black, chrome, and titanium. Also, the dimensions of the lens would be nice to know.

Thanks...I have been lurking for a while and I enjoy the forum.

Oops...you are talking about an older version, hmn, I dunno! Maybe someone else knows. FWIW, I like my chrome 35 lux asph. The weight is kind of reassuring.

Weight of black versions is 195 gm. The listings I have include the titanium version but do not list a separate weight. Perhaps it is the same but all the other titanium finished lenses are heavier. Sorry no weight for the chrome finish.

The diameter is 53mm (front 48mm) and the length from the bayonet flange is 28mm.

PS: Performance at f/1.4 is marginal at best. If you are going to buy one, buy as new a one as you can find. This is one lens that needs all the help it can get from modern coatings.

My 1994 brochure agrees with John C. - and lists the titanium 'finish' weight as the same as black - 195g. (the 'titanium' lenses are coated/ painted rather than actual Ti metal).

It doesn't list a chrome weight - but the Summicron preASPH chrome is listed at about 56% heavier than the black (250g vs. 160g), so by extrapolation (since they are very similar in size) the chrome 'lux should come in at about 310-320g (or close enough to that weight that your fingers won't know the difference).

Since no one has mentioned it I will. The pre-asph 'lux is a gem because a)it is just about the smallest and lightest 'modern' M lens around b) the bokeh and 'luminosity' are superlative-this lens will give you that classic B&W Leica look in spades. So it flares and is a bit soft...so what?

May I suggest you give a long hard look at the Voigtländer Ultron 35 ? My girlfriend has one and I'm more and more thinking of getting an adaptor ring.
